Honestly, since liberals control most of the MSM, it would probably have been better for the Pubs to have lost control of the House and let the Dems run the whole show for the foreseeable future. That way there would be no excuses; their path either improves the economy and balances the budget or it doesn't.

Oh, that's where you're wrong. They'll always have an excuse.

I'm hopeful that we'll have a Simpson/Bowles-esque grand bargain with this debt cliff negotiation.

I think most knowledgeable folks are of a similar mind (certain details being debatable from person-to-person), but I seriously do not think there are enough in Congress with the political will to make the necessary level of immediate cuts needed. I think what we'll see is something akin with what Reagan ended up getting in the 80's: he allowed tax increases to happen as part of the compromise but the cuts promised by Dems never happened.

The only explanation I can come up with is that they want to hit bankruptcy or whatever will happen once we mathematically can't pay our debt(this "debt limit/cliff/default" farce is not to that level yet).

Saying they'll tax the rich keeps up the illusion that they actually want to fix a problem, while doing nothing about it.

But, that's the only solution they have other than gutting military.

That's less than a TENTH of what is needed. I say 30% cut across the board. Every branch, every department, every office, every agency.

One thing for sure, as long as the Pubs have any power at all, they will be assigned blame for anything that is wrong.

They had absolutely no power for over a year, and they still got blamed for obstructionism as the "party of NO." What the hell makes you think it would be any different for any other period of time?

There's some departments that can be eliminated entirely like the EPA.

I think there is real entitlement reform on the horizon. Everyone has political cover (Obama's not running again and the R house doesn't have to oppose him as much and we don't have an election for 2 years). I agree with an across the board cut (although 30% is a little optimistic - they'll probably just limit future growth). I think everyone has to feel the pain. As long as we're trying to stick "the other guy" with it, we'll never solve the problem.

Of course it's complicated with the economy so it will have to be phased in (i have no problem with phasing in tax increases, too) but if we don't do it now, we may really be in trouble.

$824 B is not exactly small potatoes. NPR's yearly budget is about $150 million (m not b). Eliminating NPR would generate/save (over ten years) around 1/600th of the revenue that would come from the increase.

You are comparing possible numbers to definite numbers. When speaking of future monies from taxation raises/cuts they are theoretical. Spending cuts/increases are concrete.

The extra monies from the tax increases is a guess that really only holds up if the economy tends to thrive. Under the past 4 years we've seen anemic growth during a period where it should be roaring. That doesn't give me faith in current leadership, the near-future for the economy and thus for the estimated amount of monies the tax increase would draw in.

On the other hand, cutting NPR tomorrow is a definite and tangible lessening of debt accrual which brings us that much closer to a balanced budget. Yes, it's not much but it's the bird in the hand as opposed to the two in the bush.

Currently the GOP is talking about giving in on taxes, yet the Dems are still saying there is no way in hell that they'll touch SS or Care/aid. With that in mind, I don't see where such a possibility exists. I hope you are right though because it's sorely, sorely needed.

Democrats will never agree to cut entitlements. That's what re-electing Obama was all about, making sure nothing gets cut.

At this point after every other Recession, the economy has been coming back strongly. Due to the uncertainty of the business community (because of the upcoming "fiscal cliff" as well as holding its collective breath for the election and waiting to see if Obamacare would be defeated), comparative growth at this point is pathetic.

There's just no end to the double standards in politics. Yes, the tax hikes are a drop in the bucket of govt revenue. But Repubs oppose it on the grounds that it will be detrimental to investment. You can't have it both ways. 5% extra of marginal tax on the top bracket is nothing. We've had much higher rates through the most prosperous times in history. Most of the upper bracket earners are paying effective rates of less than 20% today anyway. The question is really this - which party is going to give in on this minor issue so that we can move along?

And if nothing gets cut, nothing gets fixed. Basing any fixes primarily on raising taxes is just smoke and mirrors used to hide their kicking the can down the road. The big problem is that the road doesn't go much farther.

Why do we even need and Education Dept. We did great(better than today) when all education was controlled at state and local level.

Segregation Excluded of course.

Seems as if a whole lot of really innovative and brave people never had a Federal level Dept of Ed.

In Obama's second term the EPA will become the second most powerful civilian department after the IRS.

As they say on The Rant....book it!!

Our country is full of dumb fricks bad at math who actually think the rich don't pay taxes even though they pay most if them.

They are too retarded to ask these questions.
