Bought this gun and scope new in box last year for $600 from a guy who was having a "Get'n out of marriage, bitch ain't get'n my shite" sale.

Is this "too much gun" to deer hint hard woods with? Im hunting with it this year just to see if its overkill. Im thinking about selling it if it is and getting a nice AR setup. I always sore I'd never sell a gun, bit I have no attachment what so ever with this gun so I've really been considering it.
If I thought I ever needed to take down an Elk or Grizzly I'd keep it, but I just don't see that happening. What says the OB?

I guess. I already have (2) .270's, 30-06, British .303 and a Lever Action 30-30 so its not like I don't have rifles to hunt with. Im mostly concerned with what kinda damage this thing will cause. The smallest grain bullet I can find is 185gr and I shoot VitalShocks. Worried if I Shoot Big Boy its gonna leave a baseball sized exit wound.

I wouldn't deer hunt with it.

I wouldn't sell it either though unless your bud wants it back. Use it for pigs or something and you might go elk hunting one day.

Will do, im sure it would go pretty quick depending on the offer. Stepdad offered me $1000 for which was tempting. I think the gun runs around $1100 and the Scope $700. The $1000 was a pretty fair offer, its just so damn hard to sell a gun. I really don't think I could do it. Lol

Be careful with it or the deer will wind up too dead.

Seriously though, it is more than you will need to knock them down, but if you are good at shot placement you could still use it without destroying too much meat. I have shot deer with 165gr out of my .30-06, so 185 isn't too crazy. I wouldn't go plinking with it, but you could drop a deer.

I deer hunt, goat hunt with a .338 win mag sometime. It's not "too much gun." Great round IMO. You can even use it if you decide to go on safari...

I do too but consider how much slower that round is traveling. My handloaded 30-06 hunting rounds are in the 2600-2700fps range. I'm sure that .338 with a 185gr is doing 3000+.

I think it's a bit overkill for deer. Then again, if you take neck shots you can save the meat and decapitate the deer at the same time.
