We're heading up tonight. Never been there for an NFL game. Anything special goes on before the game? Any particular places to hit pregame?

TacoMac is an amazing sports bar on game day, walking distance to the dome.
There's a fancy sports bar calls Stats but it's not really fun.
The drinking holes are in midtown. I would take a cab ~$12 and head to 14th and Crescent. Walk towards 12th and stop at a few places. Cosmo-Lava is personal favorite. Enjoy.

If he's staying downtown, he can hit up Gibney's or Meehan's within a very short walking distance of his hotel.
I concur with some of the Midtown places, as there are several good ones. Heck, dude can take MARTA to the Midtown station and hit up Charlie G's, Steamhouse, the midtown Taco Mac location, Hudson's Grille, and still be within walking distance of Crescent and go to Ri Ra or Front Page News, among other places.
Lots of options.

Uhhhhhh.... Got drunk after the UNC vs LSU game and went there. Ordered some burger that had two omletts, 12 peices of bacon, a burger patty and had two grilled cheese sandwhiches for buns.

Take Marta to midtown and take your choice of places. Hudson Grille and TacoMac are the sports bars. Front Page News on Crescent is a NOLA themed restaurant/bar decked out in Saints stuff so you might feel welcome there.
