Do Les and staff get any credit for managing all the attrition etc.?

I mean, disregarding all of the key losses to the NFL in the offseason, I'm talking about all of the losses of key starters in August from an already young team. We lost perhaps the nation's best defensive player and a top punt returner in a very publicized way one week before the season started, then proceeded to lose one of the nation's top offensive linemen, our best running back and both a starting linebacker and his replacement before we hit the meat of our schedule. Freshmen who had never seen the field before started or played significant minutes at key positions throughout the entire season.

In addition, we were the ONLY contending team in the West who had to play TWO contending teams from the East, with Bama playing NONE and A&M playing one AT HOME. And yet, we finished the season a strong 10-2, with our only losses being one score affairs against the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in America.

If we win our bowl game, Les' average wins per season will slowly creep toward 11 (10.75). That's 11 wins per season, including the two "bad" seasons in which we won 8 and 9 games. With a bowl win, Les will have six seasons out of eight with 2 or fewer losses.

Who knows? Maybe the best is yet to come. Les has only been a head coach since 2001. The current best coach in the biz, Nick Saban, has been a head coach since 1995, and had a year in 1990 as Toledo's head coach before Belichick came calling. Also, Saban has been in coaching since 1972. Les didn't really start until 1980. Les is really hitting that part of his career that Saban was at when he started at Bama. Saban had his share of gaffes and bad losses while at LSU but they weren't as high profile as Les' have been: the loss to UAB, the injury to Mauck in 2002, the Miracle on Markham I, the inability to score a single offensive point against a Ron Zook team in 2003, the horrific blowout at Georgia in 2004 and the end of the Iowa game are just a few off the top of my head.

The key is to take the mistakes and learn from them. If Les continues to do that, there isn't any reason we can't win two or three more titles in the next ten years.

They should imo. I agree with what someone said on here that this might be miles best coaching work at LSU. The ol , the young lb's, young corners, even Mett.
Personally I feel 13-0 w jj and jl was an amazing feat

Seeing all the injuries laid out there makes you realize how deep the team should be next year if a few of the iffy NFL underclassmen come back.

With this fan base? Hell no. The idiots fans in our fan base think LSU is always the most talented team in the country and should go undefeated and win the National Championship.

What's funny is the tone of the fan base changes week after week. After we lost to UF, half the fans thought we would lose 4-5 games. After we lost to Bama, everyone was back to thinking we should have gone undefeated and be playing in Miami in January. Ignorant fans.

10-2 this season, and probably a top 5 finish when its all said and done with what has happened is pretty damn good.

The 2012 revision of the retard LSU fan handbook clearly states in section 10-1.12 Les only gets credit for recruiting (albeit according to 1-1.10 anyone could secure top 10 classes in La.). Staff gets credit only if it can be implied that Les has nothing at all to do with said accomplishment (4-12.1).

Yes. Although it's a dumb comparision, I liken it to how I've managed my fantasy football team--great draft day and long term strategy but poor decisions on game day, like sitting the better player, etc. in fantasy football.

When did this happen?

ETA: Maybe you were still talking about your fantasy football team.

Last year was an incredible coaching job that was completely overshadowed by the title game. And just remember how the season started in August, losing our starting QB the way we did, losing Josh D. for the season, all of the Willie Lyles stuff and losing our OC to Parkinson's, then having the Ware/Mathieu/Simon suspensions right before a key game against Auburn. Extraordinary really.

It is amazing how good 2011 was considering all that and considering who the QBs were.

Les never got the credit he deserved for 2005 either.

Nope, not with this fanbase. I've said repeatedly that the problem with LSU fans is they are quick to criticize every negative aspect of the program, but never want to acknowledge the successes and positives. It's always glass half empty.

I was talking about FF, just equating sitting good players to in-game playcalling, etc.

Coaches don't get enough credit for what they do outside of gameday.

Sometimes I laugh at them. Other times I wish they'd just go away.

I've said this for a while. That team was 10-1 (with wins @ Bama and Tennessee) heading into the pretty much unwinnable game in Atlanta following 11 straight weeks of football.

Exactly. Everyone always seems to focus on "playcalling." If the players are well-prepared, focused and executing, playcalling will always look good because all of the plays will work.

IMO, only if it is also fair to seriously criticize his management of team talent and his (or his "OC"'s) offensive play calling this season.

The key is to take the mistakes and learn from them.
Yes, this is the key. But can Les turn that key? What does the past tell us? I'd call it a mixed bag. The team was on an offensive plateau for most of the season. Then came the Bama game and we seemed to have put all the problems behind us. But afterwards... I'm wondering why the team regressed on offense and defense since we played Bama. So I repeat what you said so well
quote:

The key is to take the mistakes and learn from them.
Didn't see much learning happening since then - every game since Bama was a struggle.

It's simply an unfortunate thing for Miles that 2 of his really solid seasons have resulted in no trips to Atlanta. Both 2006 and 2012 ended with 2 losses, during a season where that wasn't good enough to win the west...despite both losses coming to Top 5 teams.

Of course, the Saban sycophants continue to romanticize 2001 when we limped into Atlanta with a 5-3 SEC record, after having been prison raped by Florida in Tiger Stadium, and beaten soundly by a shitty Ole Miss team at home. But...in 2001 the SECW was won with 3 losses, so in the minds of some 2001 is a better year than 2006, or 2012...despite both later seasons likely ended in a higher final season ranking.

Was Mississippi State a struggle?

I thought our 20 point win there was good enough.
