NFL to consider banning blocks below the waist...

Peter King of SI.com and NBC’s Football Night in America reports that the Competition Committee currently plans to consider eliminating all blocks below the waist. King believes the league office is “solidly behind” a comprehensive ban, but that resistance from coaches likely will prevent a full prohibition. Instead, King believes that the chop block, which is legal in some situations, will be eliminated, and that downfield cut blocks (like the one that tore Chiefs safety Eric Berry’s ACL last year) will be banned. As we explained last month, the cut block is as old as the game of football. It’s all physics. Small players can’t block larger players without taking out the legs of the bigger players. If the ban is passed, there will be no way to stop the biggest, strongest defensive players without double-teaming them, which will impact offensive output and, for one of the only times in the last 40 years, push the pendulum back to the defense.

They need to just go ahead and make it flag football already...

Cut blocks downfield are what cause injuries. This is a non-issue at the LOS.
A full ban is idiotic.
A full ban is idiotic.

This will considerably hurt the Texans running game. The zone blocking relies on cut blocks

yeah sure
hey, lets take away an age old blocking technique so offenses may get away from the running game a little more.
doubt that this would have an effect on the shoddy tackling we are seeing more and more of in the NFL.

Well since almost every rule change lately has helped the offense, maybe this will balance things out

nah. the rules would still favor the offenses way more.
A defensivee back's job would be easier in that one regard but they would still have to contend with a ridiculous amount of flags.
-defensive pass interference
-defensive holding
-illegal contact
-helmet-to-helmet hits(even if it is the result of the offensive player who ducks his head causing the hit to end up that way).

The rules governing blocks below the waist right now are fine. Enforce them and fine/suspend repeat violators.

Cut blocking is necessary for those WR trying to block a safety or LB. Big guys can just tee off to stop the run if they have help over the top.

Cut Block =/= Chop Block so when is a chop block legal?
Cut block = block below the waist by one player
Chop block = block below the waist by one player while another player is engaged up high
Removing cut blocks at the LOS or downfield would be moronic. They point to one example of an injured DB like its some epidemic.

That was enough for them to create the horse collar crap

To be fair, that play was pretty horrific. It looked like the McGahee injury in reverse.
