Well I still haven't listened to the latest record so I can't give my opinion on it. I was just referring to the basic and stereotypical evolution of a songwriter/artist.
A middle aged man's have dulled (dulled maybe the wrong word but it's the best I could come up with) to the point where they aren't as easily accessible. The one thing art needs more than anything (and especially when your chosen art form is music) is pure unbridled emotion, typically negative emotion.

I can't knock lucero at all, they've paid their dues.
13 years in a band before they finally "made it"
that's a long arse time
but I think ben is 38 now... they aren't hungry like they used to be.

Plus I think they are going through some late stage growing pains - trying to be a little more than they are. While very talented at connecting with people on a personal and emotional level, they aren't exactly all star musicians in the technical sense.
It seems to me that they decided there was a sound they thought they should be making at this point instead of embracing who they are.

Oh I definitely agree. While they never really got "big". I feel like they took small towns all over this country by storm and I fricking love that. But

That is precisely the point of my last few posts. It's not knocking Ben it's just a fact of life that every songwriter hits a point in their life when the magics gone. Not saying he can't still write a good tune when the inspiration hits but that lack of hunger is what keeps the inspiration at bay. It's just something that happens, sad but true.

And he's not a soul singer.
Saw him solo and a few times he stopped mid song and made fun of the lyrics on the new cd "I don't even know what that means but it sounded cool" kinda jokes.
Loved the show but was telling that the were going for a style/sound that just wasn't them. Disappointing when what makes them special isn't technical ability but the ability to connect so directly. To toss that to sound cool was a major slip up. Not sure if it was them or maybe the label pushing it.

Agree with this about songwriters. The well just runs dry with age.
It sucks that putting out new albums is just what is necessary for bands like Lucero, label or not.
They have to tour to make money, and its hard to tour over and over with the same material. Personally, I'd go every time they came in town, I'd listen to the same old tunes and be happy as can be, but don't know if you can do national tours and continue to get people to come out and hear the same stuff again and again.
I realize you probably already know the point I just made, I'm just sayin.

I thought that last record came out on Dave Matthew's label, ATO (which may be the subsidiary you mention)?

That sounds right. I know they started their own label years ago too, east west. Bens solo record came out on that.

definitely on ATO, which i know at times seems to have a knack for encouraging artists to go outside their normal box. which is sometimes good, sometimes bad.
