Extraterrestrials are discovered, how do you think the world reacts

Honestly lets start simple with single celled organisms on Mars. If this were discovered on Mars, how do you think people would handle it? Would the Anti-Evolution people deny they exist? Would there be mass protest with doomsday scenarios? Would we advance or descend in chaos? What if they contacted us and the population knew? How would we handle this mentally and politically?

No jokes, just assume even the simplest life forms are discovered. How do people react?

a.) I think we will soon find evidence of life on mars. We might even find live simple organisms. Hell, we have bacteria on this planet that thrive in sulfur rich hot springs (like over 200f).

b.) The Intelligent Design will easily handle it by suggesting it was all a part of God's plan. There really isn't a way to disprove I.D. Of course you can't prove any of it either.

They have no problem doing it with evolution, despite the fact that it is more or less proven.

Doesn't bacteria already live in the clouds above Venus?

Looks like no proof, but experts suspect

quote:

Scientists suspect that Venus's atmosphere might hide extraterrestrial lifeforms, and in the most extraordinary safari ever, they want to go there and capture them with a flying balloon. Interplanetary travel, extraterrestrial life, and Venusian airships - anyone doing anything other than science is missing out.

quote:

There's even a NASA option to fly there, deploy a floating collector, and rocket the samples back to Earth for analysis. Not only might there be other life in the universe - they might live right next door.

As far as we know, no. Trust me everyone would know that. If they discovered bacteria formed independently outside of earth, then it would be bigger than the fricking moon landing,. Trust me you wouldn't question it.

It looks like the Curiousity team is about to announce something like this. The implications will be staggering.

If past postulations that life is relatively rare, and requires a very narrow combination of circumstances are thrown out by our finding of life on literally the closest planet to us and the first place we really looked - then the assumption that life is abundant in the universe must be given more credence.

Now, I don't expect a bunch of humanoids with different forehead configurations to start showing up to say, "Howdy", but even if evidence of simple life forms are proven to exist on Mars, there remains only 2 possibilities on the big question:

There are either other intelligent, sentient life forms in the universe, or there are not. Either possibility is frightening.

Agreed. I think we will be the first generation to see some sort of an extraterrestrial, rather it be single cell or incredibly complex.

I'd be positively ecstatic. It's impossible that the only life in the universe is here.

Why is that? There are more hostile places on Earth that life thrives in than Mars offers. You're likely one of those people in talking about that would make BS excuses for them not being living.

Ya'll continue to make the mistake of confusing faith with science.

It takes a lot more faith to buy into the athiest's origin theory. Every life form we know of, have experience with, is subject to observation either implicitly, or intuitively came from a parent life form of some kind. That is one of the definitions and markers OF life.

You want to say that evolution is proven? To a certain point - we can observe organisms evolve, and have some evidence of evolutionary changes in the past. But the evolution of all life on Earth descending from a single organism that literally popped in out of thin air? That takes a greater leap of faith than ID, in my humble opinion.

I thought, given the massive number of solar systems in our universe that it was a mathematical certainty that there is life somewhere out there. I just have always assumed there was life and only the relative intelligence of said life was in question.

Who says it popped from thin air? No I don't believe it and that it was somewhat guided, but all life has a common ancestor from billions of years ago.

I'm not sure even the intelligence is in question, is it? I'm being serious here; if I'm wrong, someone tell me. Given that there is almost certainly life outside of Earth, and given that the universe is positively enormous, there's probably quite a bit of life out there, some unintelligent, some advanced, some like us, some not.

I agree. Even it it is extremely rare that life exists the universe is infinite for all we know or damn near. It is just mathematically impossible that we are the only life forms in the universe.

Frankly, athiests suggest this very thing, more or less, happened.

quote:

No I don't believe it and that it was somewhat guided, but all life has a common ancestor from billions of years ago.

Okay, that's reasonable. The "somewhat guided" clause is certainly not inconsistent with intelligent design.
