While the B1G makes the most money, they just don't have access to the big recruits in the south that want to stay home. This article has a couple of great images that shows the talent differential.

LSU should be able to stay a top 5 program for a long time since they have a ton of in state talent and no other BCS level school to compete for them.

Interesting charts.

What the hell happened to Pennsylvania quarterbacks and linebackers?

"It hurts sometimes when you think about it," Ohio State defensive back Bradley Roby told me. "We believe we're one of the best teams in the country, and we can't prove it."

At least, not now. Not in this Big Ten.

But honestly, I don't even know if competitiveness is a real priority anymore, as long as the money keeps flowing.

Best guess I have is that the little towns tied to the steel and coal-mining industries have generally died out, with those families moving elsewhere.

Per capita numbers are very nice to look at. So are raw population numbers.

Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi population - 12.6M

Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania population - 34 million

Similar numbers across other states. The number of prospects deficiency in per capita numbers is made up in raw population.

This is why Ohio can have 7 division 1 football teams and be a feeder state for division 1 programs from Michigan, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois and others while Louisiana only has 4 division 1 teams. Louisiana does provide division 1 talent to other states but not on the scale (raw numbers) that Ohio does.

Still he makes a compelling argument why tOSU should dominate the Big10 as long as they want to with Ohio being one of the few states up there producing NFL talent.

Agreed and they have been for a decade now. Michigan only competes because they get a ton of Ohio players. There's enough talent in the state that there are always plenty of overlooked/butthurt/Walmart Wolverines to go up there.

Wonder how the population shift south will affect things in the future.

more midwestern teams will need to recruit heavily in the south...

and ND and OSU are the only two that do consistently well, so obvious OSU will dominate the B14 moving fwd...

The B1G appears to be poised to be heading south as a conference with the latest expansion. That will help recruiting for Ohio State and other marquee programs (not naming them this week) even more.

"And in case you missed it, all of this was hammered home by the high-profile oopsy-daisies of standard-bearing Ohio State in BCS bowl games throughout the '00s."

This is a gem...considering they won a national title over a top 5 team of all time team potentially, won a BCS game against a KSU team that throttled OU the year they barely lost to LSU in the NCG, beat a top 10 ND team in a Fiesta bowl, lost 2 NCGs (1 of which to a superior talent team in LSU), lost to potentially the best team in the country in the 2008 Fiesta bowl, then beat the Pac XII/SEC in back to back BCS bowls...so I come out with 3 losses and 5 wins. Funny how that means they are awful

Yeah, I didn't see that as a great article either.

Sitting center court Row M for the hoops game Friday night. Urban Meyer and the seniors are supposed to speak at the game.

And I know I'm an OSU fan so of course I'm bias, but I thought the game on Saturday was quite entertaining. Did the author like the LSU/UF game more? Or maybe that barn-burner of UGA/UF?

Everyone knows about the population shift, but the traditional schools, OSU/Mich/PSU/Nebraska/ND if they get them will still carry enough weight everywhere to get a lot of great players

Arkansas still has a loss in that game. I was there. I saw what happened.

the word "great" gets thrown around too freely on this board.

All the author did was rehash old information, add a bit about expansion, and package it on Grantland.

OK.

Nothing great or earth shattering or even ground breaking in there.

you didn't play USC, Florida or OU, those were the best 3 teams

tOSU's BCS "failures" have been greatly exaggerated, especially by SEC fans.

It was the 2009 Fiesta Bowl and actually we did play USC that season and got our asses handed to us.
