Is the steroid scare BS?

If it isn't, then why lump steroids in with protein powder?

Title of article

quote:

A dangerous trend: Kids and teens using steroids
A new study shows that about five percent of middle and high school students have used anabolic steroids to put on muscle, and that as many as one-third of boys and one-fifth of girls have used protein powder or shakes. Between five and 10 percent admitted to using non-steroid muscle-enhancing substances like creatine.

OMG they're taking protein powder!

well they are supplements. But i am thinking the author has no idea what they are talking about.

I have read that there are some worries about lead levels in whey protein powder. But I drink a shake on workout days. I ain't scared.

I can live with that number.

quote:

The horror!

quote:

Between five and 10 percent admitted to using non-steroid muscle-enhancing substances like creatine

Jumping Jesus! Kids are using a supplement that's found naturally in meat? This must stop.

I didn't read the article, but if he is really comparing steroid use to protein and creatine supplemental use, the writer doesn't know what he's talking about.

The steroid scare is total BS. HBOs Real Sports did a segment a few years ago and they basically showed that there is ZERO evidence that steroids are bad for you. They couldn't even find one credible study showing they caused long-term harm to healthy adult men.

What was the name of that documentary on steroid use? Something like Better Fast Harder Strong.. where is was basically inconclusive that steroid use had adverse effects.

There was one called that. Here is the HBO Special....it is REALLY good! Sorry for the shitty quality video: LINK

quote:

As Bryant Gumbel said, "As frequently evidenced by officials nationwide, Americans, when drugs are concerned, rarely choose logical when they can opt for hysteria." (Real Sports, 2007)
Bryant Gumbel went on the further state: "In light of the media excess, the public pronouncements, and the waling in Washington, one would assume that the scientific evidence establishing the health risks of steroids is overwhelming. But it's not. On the contrary, when it comes to steroid use among adult males, the evidence reveals virtually no fire, despite all the smoke." (Real Sports, 2007) So, with all of the hype of how bad anabolic steroids are for people to use, we will be able to see that there really is no evidence to prove so.

Just saw this on the news! They said "protein powder" as if it were a bad thing.

One day they outlaw big gulps and claim the kids are far and it is a epidemic now when they workout and eat right they are extreme!!

What gives?

They don't have long term effects if you cycle them right but most don't. As with most things if you them in excess something is likely to break. Liver, kidneys, heart, etc.

Steroids are perfectly safe if prescribed as indicated in the package insert. They become unsafe because shite house doctors are ubiquitous in any gym.

Bigger, Faster, Stronger. An EXCELLENT, unbiased documentary about 3 brothers. All were "gym rats". All first hand accounts, plenty of experts interviewed, great history of some of the reasons steriods are used in and outside of sports.

Best thing ever produced about steriods in general, and steriods in U.S. sports over time.

Eh, I'm not going to sift through the literature. But to suggest that exogenous use of steroids is completely benign in nature is probably a little bit disingenuous.

But the sentiment is probably correct, the hysteria surrounding the use of anabolic steroids is more than likely out of proportion to incidence rate of complications assoc. with steroid use.
