Need a new modem or router?

Not sure which one i need, but i want to boost my internet performance.

I lose signal strength when my fiancee is on the internet when i'm trying to play Call of Duty. Do i need a stronger router or modem?

possibly both...do you know what type of modem/router you have currently? what type of internet speed are you running with?

Upgrade to the next level of internet. The router or modem have nothing to do with it.

My wife used to connect her laptop while I would play COD. It would always lag and I could tell the second she would log on.

I upgraded my internet package to the next tier and my problem went away.

You need to not game on wireless, for starters. Even a router with higher throughput won't change the inherent flaws in wireless technology. It's great for file transfers, browsing, downloading, and even streaming, but terrible for anything that requires low latency, zero packet loss, and consistent throughput. Ethernet cable connected to your router will at least solve any problems you have there.

It won't make your internet any faster, though. Neither will a new modem, unless your current modem is malfunctioning. What is your current internet package?

to be fair, given the right circumstances this isn't always true. If you have a high enough internet connection (over 28ish megs I think) a Docsis 3.0 modem is required to take advantage of the faster internet speed. Anything less than that and a 2.0 is fine. I know I'm being picky, but I can't help it

Not an option.

It worked fine in my old house. But i also had my modem and router in the same room as my xbox.

Now its in another room.

Gaming on wireless is fine if you have decent Internet. It's how I've gamed for the last5 years and I've never had problems unless my Internet sucks

you really need to find out your internet speeds...is it cable or dsl? have a model number on the modem? was it supplied by the internet provider?

While ethernet cabling is definitely more desirable than wireless, it truly isn't that big of a deal. I play on wireless on my PC and wired on my PS3 (PS3 is next to the router, pc is not).. And I find no real difference in latency or stability. Wireless technology has come a long, long way my friend. Especially with wireless N nowadays.

My question for the OP is: You said your "signal strength" goes down. Do you mean the bars in BLOPS2 that show your connection/latency, or do you mean you wireless signal? If you mean in games or in blops, you need to upgrade your internet package. If you mean your wireless signal is lowering, you need a new/better router.

The bars in games.

I had to actually move my router because the home office was too far away from the master bedroom to get a signal
