I'm beginning to think that Nintendo could throw shite on a stick and you would love it.

I'm convinced Nintendo could make the greatest console of all time and you would still hate it.

quote:

I admit that I have a bias against Nintendo, but I did play it and the current application of the Wii U controller and the touch pad is anything but a necessity. Until they can produce a game where the touchpad is a vital and useful part of the game it is nothing more than a gimmick.

The console has been out for one fricking day. Think you could give it more time than that before you start spewing shite that this console can't produce good games that the touchpad is essential on?

quote:

To add to my rant, like I said previously, having to switch back and forth from the TV to the touchpad to perform menial little gameplay additions takes away from the flow and immersiveness of the game.

People were saying the same thing about the DS, and look how that turned out. I think Nintendo's big thought with this system is bringing that experience to a home console.

Yes...the gimmicks offered by the Wii U controller improve upon the games. That doesn't necessarily make them less of gimmicky. Does using the gamepad as your inventory selector make the game better.....sure. Is it a gimmick...yes it is.

So pretty much any improvement on any given system is simply a gimmick. Guess HD, DVD, Bluray, and analog sticks are all gimmicks then.

this should make my next comment that a significant increase in graphics from one gen to the next doesn't qualify as a gimmick, make more sense.

Yeah, your definition of a gimmick is simply based on graphics, not how games are played. Seriously, how much better are games going to look in the future? There was hardly that much of a leap between the XBox and the XBox 360 as far as graphics are concerned. Sure they're slightly better, but compared to the jump between the SNES and the N64, the jump isn't noticeable. Those new graphics don't change the gameplay.

A gimmick is something that is completely unnecessary to the gameplay and doesn't improve it in the slightest. That is as simple as saying just because it has better graphics means its the better game.

There's a reason why this console generation has continued much longer than any of the others. Graphical limitations are starting to level out. Everyone but you knows this.

I get that you center every argument around Nintendo (NES to N64) but REALLY?

Not to spin off thread here but since you're in China have you seen any of those knockoff consoles in action?

Compared to the jump between previous generations, yes. It just looks more refined, but you can still more or less produce the same environments. Look at Metroid Prime for example, and its graphics still hold up 10 years later.

Buy knockoff clothes and jewelry here, but don't buy electronics. They work fine for 3 or so months, but then quickly break.

I gave up reading the arguments. I just want to share why my first day with the U was amazing.

I watched the Saints game while my son sat next to me playing Mario on the controller.

Now when i pick up Assassins Creed later this week Ill be ready for a real review, until then its been alot of fun.

Pixar quality tops, and the games don't look incredibly different to me from most digitally animated films. It'll be a long time til they're truly life like. The graphics are starting to level out. Take a look from gaming in the past 40 years

1972:

1982:

1992:

2002:

2012:

Seems like there is a much smaller gap between 2002 and 2012 than any other.

No it won't.

They can already do this, but the file size would be ridiculous.

To be honest, consoles are holding back game development. They keep having to code for outdated systems 5yrs after. Yes, the next gen consoles will have next gen stuff but it will just be things we could of had 3-4yrs ago.

Consoles have relatively stayed the same and held back development. Another thing you aren't looking at is Physics. Movement and physics can't be accounted for in screenshots.

I know its possible, since there are companies like Pixar, that new Tintin movie, and then of course the fully realized Arnold in "Terminator Salvation". But you are actually pretty correct on why we won't be seeing this anytime soon. We still just don't have the technology to put them on a home system. I'd bet it will be another 20 years to see the same special effects on the standard console than we do with current special effects.

That being said, do most games really call for this? The only two genres I can think that this would greatly help is the FPS and historical genre. The rest, not really. Mario, Zelda, God of War, and Warcraft have all reached just about the peak on where their graphics need to be.

The Miiverse is really the best feature about this console, also the ability to access that as well as the browser in a game makes this extremely convenient.
