We've gone from the melting pot,

to the cobb salad,

To finally, where we are, today:

Thanks, multiculturalism...

A society with no shared ideology will devolve into a tossed salad of fruits and nuts eventually. The verbage of so many of the Administration about "thier people" is one way to judge this idea and its impact on the country. For being post-racial the effects of thier beliefs have greatly increased the vehemence of racism across the nation.

We've been a melting pot, but Politicians have found ways to divide us, and I think we are heading in wrong direction, as of late.

The melting pop was always oversold. Truth be told immigrants always lived in their own communities for the first if not second generations, think NYC Chinatown, little Italy, etc. It was the later generations that integrated more. I don't know what it is like where you live, but that seems to still be how it is where I live.

In some ways we are more integrated then ever. Go to any ethnic restaurant and you will see what I mean. Yesterday I was in a Mediterranean restaurant run by an Egyptian family. Behind the counter was a Thai women, and eating in there were people speaking Spanish, Japanese, and Arabic along with english.

The politicians ARE dividing us. Look at the election. All the analysts are saying that the Republicans lost because they didn't appeal to Blacks, Hispanics, Women, etc...

It's not ok to assume that we are all AMERICANS and that what's good for America is good for ALL Americans. Instead, our politicians try to figure out how they can carve out voting blocks and use the federal largesse to win their votes.

The Republicans tried to win by campaigning on fiscal sanity - balancing the budget and improving the economy so that EVERYONE can have a job. That kind of all-inclusive campaign won't work. You have to tell each constituency group why they are most important and how you are going to set aside goodies for them...

How much of a burden on the Treasury were the immigrants from Europe when they arrived on our shores? Now go look at the spendings on social programs, the prison populations of many states, the cost of education(mostly bi-lingual for the extra bucks), the job displacement cause by the willingness to work cheap as no taxes are bing deducted from thier pay. Stick to posting on the UCLA boards, that way you can keep up with people of your dysfunctional, broke as frick state which your crowd has made it to be now.

Nothing unites people like a common enemy. See WWI & WWII. Those wars changes us from individuals to a united country.
It changed on a cool day in Texas.

The difference is that those immigrants knew they were different, but sought to assimilate. They moved over here knowing that they couldn't speak the language and probably wouldn't make it big, but they wanted to make sure their children had the opportunity to live the American Dream.

Some immigrants still feel that way. Others have fallen victims to "victimization" tactics used by politicians. They rally together over being poor and disenfranchised, instead of doing something about it and improving their situation.

My ONLY problem with immigration is this:
A person leaves their Shithole country because of terrible economy, lack of opportunity, crime, no healthcare, whatever....THEN- they come here and vote for the same programs that destroyed their country. (Socialism, Political Corruption, Spend more than make, Free Everything)

Also, this Spanish everything is BS. Does the US just want to hand over the South? Move to TX and prepare to be amazed at the dissolving border between USA and Mexico...Hookers, Gangs, Drugs on a scale many people here will not be able to fathom. People have knocked on my door at work with 3 ring binders full of hookers with Pictures. 18-45 age range. $50 dollars a throw and a special townhouse set up for the transactions.

re: Immigration in the US

NOTE: My issue is not with immigration. My issue is with the way some immigrants assimilate. Immigrants of old moved to America, but they expected that they would have to assimilate - learn the language and traditions of our country - in order to maximize their experience of what America has to offer.

Nowadays, immigrants don't want to do that - they expect America to change in order to accommodate and take care of them.

So many have this silly notion that there is no true American culture, and that American culture is actually multiculturalism, and that other country's culture, traditions, and religion have more merit than American culture and traditions.

It is not a joke. It is the reality of South Texas. Boys Town has died for all intents and purposes due to the drug wars...and girls gotta work...

Plenty of prostitution in the border towns, and some quite successful capitalists I might add....

....It never occurred to me to take pics. The first time I was approached by an entrepreneur...I was kind of caught off guard. I thought I was going to be signing an invoice.

You sound like Mitt Romney. Face it America is no longer just white people, it's multi racial. I didn't vote for Pres Obama because I want stuff. I have stuff, really too much stuff. If the Rep party stays on this track, they will continue to lose Pres elections.

Same thing people said when the Irish, Italians,Catholics, Jews, etc. showed up.

What you are saying is you want everybody to act white.
