quote:
Captain Peter Gautier of the Coast Guard said the platform, run by Black Elk Energy, was not producing oil and no enviromental threat is anticipated. Gautier said it is believed that the incident occurred as maintenance workers were cutting a pipe and some oil may have gotten loose, causing the fire.

It's a production platform, non drilling related....more than not its a non hydro carbon event. Even so, there are many safety valves closing pipelines to prevent spills. I know I know, BOP's were supposed to stop Macondo too

Obviously safety protocols weren't followed here.

Someone in the chain made a mistake in methods of cutting into the pipe. An air powered saw whose proper name I am farting about, makes what is called a cold cut into pipe. The drains along the line should have been opened to test for the presence of hydrocarbons in the line.

Yep. So many fail safes to stop this from happening. I guarantee there was a safety mtg, JSA's filled out, a work permit, and hot work permit signed by two different authorized permit issuers, and it still happened. How that line wasn't flushed and cleared with N2 is beyond me :nb4gettingaheadofmyself:

yes BOP's were supposed to give BP well control but they weren't running a subsea test tree (back up to the BOP that sits inside the stack) either

Did not have to...they were finished drilling, they were plugging and abandoning the well. The failed cement job and under balanced displacement with seawater got 'em....along with many others
