Rooting an Android

I just got a galaxy s3 about a month ago. Is rooting the equivalent to jailbreaking? I was an iPhone fanboy since the 3G, but decided on not waiting for the 5 and got this.
How difficult is it to do compared to Jailbreaking (which is pretty easy)?

Sure is, doesn't get any simpler than JB'ing an iPhone, download RedSn0w, click jailbreak, done.
Hell I just sold my 4S on eBay, so I had to restore 5.1.1 to wipe it and rejailbreak it for the guy, too easy even when Apple isn't signing 5.1.1 anymore. Restored through Redsn0w using my Cydia blobs, piece of cake.

you can tether/hotspot the S3 without rooting.
FoxFi is an app that's blocked on PlayStore, but you can download it from their website on your phone (foxfi.com/bin)
then download the FoxFi Add-On from the PlayStore...the add-on blocks information about your data traffic so your carrier doesn't send you nasty-grams about your data usage...fwiw

Android phones can do what most Jailbroken iPhones can do without rooting, including mobile hotspots. Rooting is to get superuser access to the phone for some additional permissions, most commonly used to change the kernel and ROM, thereby effectively changing the operating system on the phone and removing provider bloatware.
In short, you don't need to root to do mobile hotspots on most Android phones. Pretty sure the S3 doesn't require it.

I'm not sure how different it is for the S3 but I have a galaxy nexus and some in the community have made toolkits that allow you to hook your phone up to the computer and will walk you through the drivers you need and also helping you with adb. It couldn't be simpler.
I would suggest rooting your phone to anyone. If you follow instructions you run very little risk to your phone. There are so many roms and programs that you can use once you are unlocked and rooted. If you plan on keeping your phone for a long time you will definitely get more useful life out of it because you'll be able to continue updating to new versions of android after your carrier stops supporting your phone.
