Discussion Topic: Can fantasy football be improved?
Posted by bas456 on 11/15/12 at 4:57 pm00
I can't think of any major format changes since I started playing. It seems like a major flaw of fantasy football is that most of the 30-35M who play are casual players who disengage when they feel a point deficit is too great to overcome. Have any sites tried anything to account for this?
What would you change about fantasy football?

None of my leagues have enabled FAAB. Probably because that feature is for highly skilled, active players, which my leagues don't have.
One idea I had was to implement an in-game prop bet feature to allow more control after the games have kicked off. Something like "Risk 10% of Andrew Luck's points to increase Luck's total by 10% if he rushes for a TD". Or if he is having a bad game, you can make bets against him to attempt to control the downward spiral.

We play in a league with 24 people. Two separate leagues are drafted, 12 owners in each. Each week, the top 6 highest scoring teams are given a win while the bottom 6 are given a loss. The championship game is the champion from each division.

Scoring needs to be standardized. That way, people could compare their teams/records/players when they are in different leagues.

Interesting you should ask that. I did a survey yesterday for my cousin's boyfriend whose marketing research class is doing a study. The study offered three different scenarios to improve fantasy football. If you have 5-10 minutes check it out. Here is the LINK

This is one of the suggestions in the study

Usually just lurk on this board.....took the same survey earlier today, it was forwarded to me. I thought the prop bets and the play predictor were both interesting.

Thanks for posting this. The statistical comparison feature, prop bets, and play-calling indicator would be badass. I hope these happen in the near future

Thats awesome. 2 of the ideas in it are in-game features which I think are needed. I really like the idea of betting against a guy on your roster to lessen the blow if he is having a bad game. That said, a 10% increase on Reggie Bush's 3.5 points last night wouldn't have helped much.
Most fantasy leagues are based either on head-to-head win/loss records or total points. Both have inherent problems. In head-to-head, you can have the best team in the league yet not make the playoffs due to other teams having great weeks against you. With total points, a few great weeks could carry you even if you are below average in most weeks.
I like the idea I've heard before (and someone mentioned earlier in the thread) of the half of the teams with the highest scores each week getting wins and the bottom half getting losses. Unfortunately, none of the major sites (Yahoo, ESPN, etc.) offer this option as far as I know.
I guess an alternative that would have the same result would be to have each team face every other team in the league each week.

This is a really interesting idea. But would the players need to have access to all the games for this to be effective? It also might be a bit stressful to have to pay such close attention to so many games. It would definitely would have to be for very serious players.

My problem with it is that it sort of gives an unfair advantage to the team that's losing. Say you're down like 40 going into Monday night with just Frank Gore left so you make a bet and risk a large percentage of points.. If it works in your favor you can get the W, but if not, you were going to lose anyway.

Have a small change. I think 60 yard field goals should be 6 points.
Tis all I got.

Most people that play fantasy football don't understand the concept of bidding.
For example, my league does waiver wire claims based off bids. A guy in my league spent his SEASON BUDGET by Week 5.

My critique would be that format makes the game more fair by worsening the probability of a low scoring team winning each week. That wouldn't help keep "the bottom half" engaged, especially over the course of the season. The top half needs the bottom half to keep interest because it isn't as fun when half the league mails it in.

Yet another benefit of the system IMO. In this system, the lower half would be mailing it in against everyone in the league and not just against the guy I'm competing with for the final playoff spot.

I'm not sure its unfair if everyone has the same opportunity. It would change the way the game is played. The question is, would it be better? I think you'd see most people sitting on their early starts. Maybe if a guy was having a terrible game they'd make a couple bets against him to neutralize that. 70% of the betting would be on the Monday night game.
