Best Washing Machine/Dryer--Need Opinions

I need to buy a new washing machine and dryer. I'm not looking to break the bank and buy some thing that looks like it could pilot a rocketship. I know, not an OT baller.

I have pretty much decided on a top load he machine. I don't care for front load and have heard stories about mildew and the need to clean the washing machine, etc. I'm gonna go with HE, b/c it does use a hell of a lot less water.

I don't know what brand is the best for reliability, etc. I normally would go with Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore. I've been googling a little, but most sites don't have enough reviews of any single model to make me choose it over another.

What does the OT say? Budget is about $1000-$1200 for both washer and dryer. I don't need anything fancy, just something that will get my clothes clean.

I've used GE in the past and was disappointed and my Kenmore broke after a few years. I currently have a LG and am very satisfied but I've only had it for 3 years now. Not sure about long term reliability but so far nothing has broken yet.

I got the steam function on the dryer. It's helpful when I want to unwrinkle clothes but not sure if it was worth the extra $. But it sure saves time from breaking out the iron if I am in a hurry. The iron of course does a better job then the steam function in terms of making the clothes look crisp. But if your in a hurry and just want a shirt to wear then throwing it in a steam cycle only takes a few minutes.

I get consumer Reports and Roper has the least amount of repairs. Roper is made by Whirlpool. We bought a set of Estate (also made by Whirlpool) a couple years ago on the recommendation of an appliance repairman we know. Have'nt had any problems with it in 3 years. Check out Consumer reports.

GE is trash. My brother had a furniture and appliance store up until a couple years ago and was a GE dealer. He dropped them because of all the problems. Their quality has gone down drastically over the years. When we were shopping for a set, my appliance repair guy said, "Do not buy a GE!"

I read all the reviews and also decided on a top loader but the reviews on the HE models weren't so good either. Almost everyone complained about the clothes either not getting entirely wet or not cleaning properly. I finally decided on this standard top loader from GE. It has a rather unique washing system. HERE is a video. I've had it for almost a year now and so far no problems.
