need advice on rust removal
Posted by papt99 on 11/14/12 at 11:11 am00
I am refinishing my utility trailer. I have done it all except for one rim which is very rusted and pitting. I did the other 2 with drill and wire brush wheel and they are fine but this one is worse than the others. I checked on sandblasting but the company wanted $50 to do the job. I could buy a new rim for that. anyone got a tip on rust removal? I am thinking some kind of chemical from an auto parts store but any advice is much appreciated.

Try Ospho. You can get it at West Marine, but it's not cheap. Heard good things about it, but you still need alot of elbow grease.

Vinegar if you have a week to do it.
Naval Jelly sometimes works. Never really worked well for me though.
I used The Works toilet bowl cleaner to clean out an old gas tank. Make sure you use something to seal it afterwards, or it will start forming surface rust within 30 minutes. Oh yeah, it burns very badly and kills grass.
You can use something with other stuff in it like POR-15. I've never used it, but from what I hear, it is a bitch to properly apply, but works perfectly if done so.
If it isn't too bad, clean it with a wire brush and spray some rust paint stuff over it.

You just paint it on, not that hard

scraping and wire-brushing all rust to make sure none is loose
cleaning with chemicals
cleaning chemicals off
scuffing up metal
coat 1
coat 2
I am pretty lazy and would just wire brush it and spray enamel over the top
