Different roles each branch of the military take in crisis or wartime

I was asked this by an Australian friend, and I could really only skim the top. I felt really bad that I couldn't go more into depth about what the Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force would do at a time of war.

Can I get a summary so that I'm a better American?

Marines take a position.
Army holds a position.
Airforce defends a position.
Navy gives the Marines a ride.

Butch- I didn't go into the Navy also flies planes, etc because I'd just have to start pulling out graphs and whatnot. And I was already confused

re: Different roles each branch of the military take in crisis or wartime

In a nutshell:

Marines: ground forces, artillery, attack helicopters, attack/fighter jets

Army: ground forces, artillery, attack helicoptors

Navy: attack ships, attack subs, nuclear launch subs, aircraft carriers, attack/fighter jets

Air Force: Nuclear bombers, attack/fighter jets, transport planes, nuclear missiles

Coast Guard: Whatever

Hope this helps...
