This season is exactly why 6-1-1 needs to die

As we all know, many LSU fans find it inequitable that the schedule in conference is done with one so-called permanent opponent.

This year, LSU has played SEC East teams that are 9-1 and 8-2. Neither team has lost out of conference.

Bama, on the other hand has gotten to play 5 and 6 in the SEC East. Combined record, 9-11 (UT and Mizzou). To make matters worse, next year they get 6 and 7, both with new coaches. LSU gets 1 and 2 in the East.

This thread isn't about getting rid of Florida or making LSU's schedule easier--we like big games. It just demonstrates the inequity of the system. It would be nice if the system could be set up to help with competitive balance and maintain rivalries to the extent practicable.

Is it time that the SEC moves Tennessee to the West and Arkansas to the East (since we apparently don't care about geography anymore, see Mizzou) to take care of that game? Once that game is secure, the SEC can get a more equitable system in place.

tl;dr

Cliff notes: after this season demonstrated the inequity of 6-1-1, should we move UT to the West, Arky to the East, and use a new scheduling formula that doesn't produce East foes in pairs like UK/Mizzou and UT?

I'm not.

I think if someone wanted to move Florida and UT to our division I would be for that. This is about equity. No one wants to play UK every year. The teams need to be paired better if you get UK you need to get someone that isn't the disaster that UT is.

I would be in favor of an upper division and a lower and you relegate like in European soccer for competitive balance. I just want EVERYONE to be tested.

Our tough draw gets us the benefit of the doubt every time we need and deserve it. We can lose 1 and still be in the hunt every year. Hell, lose two some seasons and still be right there.

I think once we expanded, the permanent opponent needed to go. I don't like playing one SEC east team every year but all the others every six years.

Irrelevant. LSU should schedule numbers 1-12 every year. I get. If LSU beats the Chiefs it helps us, I know. It is a given. No one is going to challenge that point. Bama will get the benefit of the doubt this year with 9-11. Not this thread. This is about making sure ALL teams are tested. Your concern is another thread for another time. Stay on topic please.

same here. I hate the rivalery argument being used as to why you need to keep a permanent out of division opponent. There are plenty of rivals within your own division of the SEC. Out of division opponents should be rotated every year. It's just the fair way to do it.

Spurrier agrees
Take LSU off USC schedule and add to UGA who owns the tiebreaker

Bottom line. It's stupid that it's not done this way already.

Mizzou & Vandy to the West. Auburn & Bama to the East. Problems solved.

If you move UT to the West, you could conceivably destroy the permanent opponent arrangement.

Their game being protected you would have LSU, USC, Bama, UT, probably UF, TAMU, and Mizzou. Depending on the voting rules you may need one more.

Miss, MSU, Vandy, and UK like playing each other because it helps them get bowl eligible, so you would have to make a convincing case to persuade one of them. If you did, Georgia and AU could suck it.

Back in the 90's LSU would have gone to sec champ game under Dinardo twice if not for having to play Fla every year
LSU tied twice because LSU was not on the level of Fla

Of course. I think there is a way to promote equality without diminishing LSU's schedule. I like playing UF and UGA next year (1 and 2 in the East and historically good teams). I would just like to see the schedule makers come up with a more compelling slate for other West contenders. @UT, UK is not equitable. Now if they got @UT, SC or something, that would make more sense.

Please point to the season where Bama's soft schedule hurt them in the eyes of the media??? It sure as heck wasn't last year.

The most egregious offense of the 6-1-1 isn't looking at LSU and Alabama, but rather the absolute joke that is the SEC East sending Georgia to Atlanta for two straight years while South Carolina is left at home.
