Looking at purchasing my first pistol
Posted by LSUisKING12 on 11/10/12 at 8:51 pm00
I have done some research and I am very partial to the Springfield XD series but I'm wondering what caliber to go with. It's my first gun that I'll be using for home defense/carrying/range. I'm thinking either a 9mm or .40. Which one would y'all recommend?

9mm, cheaper and easier to shoot.

9mm because you will probably practice more with it.

Everywhere I read says go with the 9mm due to price of ammo and the .40 has more recoil. I was pretty set on the .40 but after reading all that I think I'm leaning towards the 9mm.

This is the reason I'm getting a 9mm

Recoil is not that much greater but 9mm ammo Is much cheaper

Y'all like the Springfield XD series? Every review I have read has been very good. Seems to be very high quality.

I've got an XDm .40 and my dad has one in 9mm. The only time I notice much of a difference is when I load up some self defense hollow points in my .40. But 9mm is definitely cheaper.

I have shot in a few IDPA events with mine. Usually around 200-300 rounds. I have never had a failure. Most shoot glocks, but the XD fits my hand better.

The .40 S&W cartridge was invented in the early 90s to improve the ballistics of the 9mm and .38 special. But with today's powder technology, the 9mm has caught up once again. The pinnacle in 9mm defensive round technology is most likely the Speer Gold Dot 124gr +p, which is my carry load.
9mm is cheaper to shoot, can hold more rounds, and allows for quicker follow-up shots. If you have to choose only one, I think 9mm is your best bet.

Get the 9mm.
.40sw has only marginally better performance and 9mm ammo is cheap as hell to shoot.

I have Ruger SR40. Freaking love it. Recoil is not as bad as people say.

I shot a Ruger P97 45 last week, absolutely no recoil and a great handling gun, dude I was trading with shot all my defense rounds at the range, made me wait an hour at Precision then decides he doesn't want to trade. fricking long hair columbine weirdo from bayou shooter.

Who was it? Just so I know not to trade with him.

This.
The first concealed carry gun I bought was a Springfield XD in 40 S&W. It shot well, but did not CARRY well. I didn't cc it long realizing how much more comfortable it is for me to cc a single stack gun than a double stack gun. If you're looking for a home defense/range gun, you'd be hard pressed to beat the XD, especially if you shoot it well. OTOH, if you're looking for a cc gun, you may not like the double stack XD's; the XDs is the only single stack mag in the series, but it's more of a cc gun, not home defense/range gun (and is chambered only in 45 ACP).
