re: America has been REPLACED.

Tx and GMorg may have some decent points about things not being the same once we sold out to the Fed Res and added the federal income tax. I agree a little bit with pimp that twitterverse/thug nation is disheartening, but I come more from the position that post WWII ain't coming through that door again -- somewhat because we were a bit more virtuous and hard-working -- but more because we had embarrassment of riches (namely energy) and a lot of manufacturing, and had a nice one time 50-75 year ride. Kunstler/Clusterfrick Nation does a nice job of bringing it all together:

quote:

For much of our history, including the first half of the 20th century, we were a resourceful, adaptive, generous, brave, forward-looking people who believed in earnest effort, who occupied a beautiful landscape full of places worth caring about and worth defending.

Since then, lost in raptures of easy motoring, fried food, incessant infotainment, and desperate moneygrubbing, we became a nation of overfed clowns who believed that it was possible to get something for nothing, who ravaged the landscape in an orgy of wanton carelessness, who believed they were entitled to lives of everlasting comfort and convenience, no matter what, and expected the rest of the world to pay for it. We even elected a vice-president who declared that this American way of life was non-negotiable.

Clusterfrick Nation blog.

An underlying problem is basically the way money works. We worship at the altar of neverending growth. As Abbey wrote, growth for the sake of growth is the ideology of the cancer cell. Or as a batshite crazy writer that I enjoy said: "The U.S. economy...is a superheated pyramid scheme of infinite growth wherein 5% of the world’s population consumes 25% of the world’s energy and a totally disproportionate share of the world’s diminishing resources and commodities." That's my big problem with the right. They rip Europe's economic model due to everyone living off the government teat, but are we much better? We just consume more IMO.

Are the schools better?
Is the debt lower ?
Is the family-unit healthier ?
Is out of birth wedlock lower ?
Is government dependency lower ?
I s American culture coarser ?

How about 1992 ?
How about 2002?

Sure you can pick the exact height of a recession and hope somebody takes the bait. But what about 1983-1988 ? And do You honestly think Obama's Dependency State Strategy and the transcendence of The State over the Individual will come anywhere near the Reagan Recovery ? To whom are you going to peddle that weak sauce ?

what about 1983-1988
For Louisiana, those were some pretty shitty years. Oil bust, New Orleans in full death spiral with a bankrupt World's Fair cherry on top, Edwards as governor, Bum Phillips, Bo Rein, etc...

People knew this would happen eventually, right?

It's not as if they thought old people would continue to live forever. The ultra right wing conservatives will eventually be buried after sucking us dry. Good riddance

No that would be incorrect.
Plenty of Democrats "are not lazy".
For instance, it's quite grueling to vote 6/7 times an election or wait in line 4/5 hours to get your gubment gravy.

There is virtually no aspect of American life where a transformation away from traditional American principles, Institutions , ideals and values is not threatening basic functionality. This is most evident as we make not only a statistical shift away from self-reliance and into the dead end that is government dependence, but in what we see and hear every day in our own lives. Our culture is failing rather spectacularly.

Your appetite to take the labor and wealth of others will not end well for this country. Not that you care.

Your culture may be failing, and there's probably a reason for that.

Here's my culture :

My Dad took us around the world working for the US Airforce. He later started a small service business and employed a dozen people for forty years.I was born in the NE,and settled in Louisiana as a kid. I Went to The State University and got a degree, busted my arse Summers working on tug boats, graduated, moved to Japan with my job, later moved to Colorado, got married, settled down and started a family. Nobody gave me shite other than encouragement, which is the most important thing anyway, it turns out.

My wife escaped the horrors of Communism in a boat, survived pirates in The Sea Of Malaysia, lived in a tent in a camp for a year, and finally received permission to come to America. My paternal grandfather barely escaped the Nazis in the 30's and made his way to America.

In my lifetime I have been fair and kind to whoever I come in contact with. When my business failed in the recession I took the hit, deferring all pay in lieu of attending to the needs of my employees and their families. All my creditors were compensated, to their great surprise, over the next year, with my personal money.I did that out of a sense of personal honor. It ruined me financially and there were many sleepless nights spent holding my crying wife. But we made it through and came out stronger.

I wake up every day and bring my kids to school. Then I work. I run 4/5 appointments each day,and it is TYPICAL that I arrive home after 10 pm.My dinner has celophane over it. I often drive 1000 miles per week. I have more work than I can handle, but I don't complain, I thank God that I have work in my self-created job, when so many others don't. I take vacations to great places and enjoy the accoutrements of prosperity,-dinner at nice restaurants, taking my kids to ball games and concerts- because I know it can be fleeting, and the love and health of my family is the important thing anyway.

In the last three months alone, one of my closest friends has lost his young son, my Mother has struggled with health issues, and a friend's wife is now struggling with cancer. As they have endured their pain and struggles I have endeavored ONLY TO BE OF SERVICE. Last night as you wrote the above, a little girl was spending the night at my home because her family member was having surgery in Nola and her parents deemed us to be the family they would entrust their daughter for the weekend.

It is an absolute miracle that my family exists in the first place. That my grandfather would survive mass State murder and my wife would survive mass State murder and that we would be blessed to live in freedom is an historical anomoly. I love The United States of America, The Constitution, Liberty and the Institutions, principles and ideals that make it the world's single INDISPENSABLE nation.

I would prefer to pass on a FUNCTIONING Nation of vitality and promise to my kids instead of one where it's citizens are on The Grift, where people are lined up ten deep with their hands out. I've spent my entire life hearing stories from my loved ones concerning how they lost their countries to "The State As God". It happened to them, it can and will happen here, if we turn our backs on our core organizing principles. If we disregard our founding principles of limited government, free markets and individual Liberty in exchange for "free goodies" from Government we WILL lose our country. If we sell our Liberty for a handful of gold, we will impoverish ourselves . We are in the process of selling our Liberty to the highest bidder.

So you look at that list in the OP and tell em how we are getting better. Let me know in what ways we are getting more virtuous as a culture, or safe-guarding our culture more vigorously . Because a Democracy requires virtue AND vigilance to maintain. Our country has lost it's way, a little at a time, for 50 years and is about to morph into something unrecognizable. Like it did in the 1850's and 1860's when we almost lost it.

If "my culture" is failing, then the America of Our Founding is failing.
