Although Darrell is often given credit for coming up with the wishbone formation it was his O coordinator Emory Ballard who went on to become a HC @ A&M & Miss St who received the lions share of the credit for making the wishbone a viable offense.
Barry Switzer did a great job of incorporating it into the Sooners offensive philosophy.

Royal's daughter was killed in a bus accident in 1973. This incident caused him to reassess where he was in life and he admittedly was less aggressive as a coach at a time when college recruiting was becoming more aggressive. By 1976, he knew it was time to move on with life. Essentially, he decided to "stop and smell the roses" as it were. He lost a son in a motorcycle accident in the 1980's.
