Outside Opinion On The Game
Posted by WesPowell on 11/5/12 at 4:37 pm00
Let me say up front that I am a fan of a non-SEC team. Just want to offer my two cents on the LSU-Alabama game.
I blame the LSU head coach. However he did what 99 percent of head coaches would do 4th and 6, up by 3 late, at the opponents 28 yard line. Attempt a field goal. I've seen this kind of philosophy employed over and over and over again.
I think it is in error. In fact I am absolutely sure it is in error.
Late in the game if you are ahead by a little and have a somewhat reasonable chance to outright end the game, you take that chance. I put 4th and 6 in the somewhat reasonable category.
If LSU goes for the 4th and 6 and gets it they win the game period. If they do not get the first down they lead 17-14 with less than two minutes left and the other team needing a lengthy drive-- even for a tying field goal.
So the up side of going for the first down is winning the game if you get it.
The downside of going for the first down and not making it is still being in the excellent position of leading with not much time left and the opponent needing about 40 yards for a chance to tie, and about 70 yards to win.
In my opinion there is only one appropriate choice here. You try and end the game with the first down. If you don't get it, you go on defense with the lead.

20-14 is over?
Yes. Kickoff. Force Bama to drive 75-80 yards to score a TD. The two blitzes (one on a screen attempting to sack McCarron out of FG range) burned them.
Talk about downs 1-3 all you want. 4th and 6...I kick the ball.

You are correct.

In fact that is the only thing that bothered me about coaching decisions, not going for the first down in 4 tries.

Was the right call IMO.
Bama needing a TD to win at that point was a pipe dream given the tone is the second half.
On one hand everyone says go or the points...until a field goal is missed then everyone wants to go for it on 4th....until you do and get stuffed.
Only two terrible calls were the fake and 54 yard attempt. Everything else came down to execution...or luck with onside kick...bad hop.

Gotta agree with Wes on this one, particularly the way we were passing the ball. That is the one play call I was disappointed in. Not all the Lesticle plays, I can live with those. Here in Bama that is what most Auburn fans (who wanted us to win almost as much as we did) questioned me about today.

Oh well.

have a somewhat reasonable chance to end the game then and there,
4th and 6? LSU couldn't convert 4th and 1 earlier. As I said, talk about the first three downs. I would have liked to have seen a play action on 3rd down because Bama was selling out. But the 4th down call was easy.

quote:In spite of other rude people here, I'm glad you stopped by to leave a thought or two on the game. A lot of LSU fans get so invested in the Tigers that they are blind to reality and don't like it pointed out. You may have noticed some fan dissention along these threads? Haha!

Yes, kicking the ball is an understandable option.
But going on 4th and 6 is also understandable.
1 play - 6 yards to put the dagger in Alabama. Go "Eye of the Tiger" on one play to take the SEC West lead and seriously jump into the BCS title conversation.
Your QB was shredding this team like Bama hasn't been shredded in years. Our WRs were catching the ball in the 2nd half like never before. At the time I was hoping we'd go for it because it was a sure way to end the game if we got it. Even making the FG, I knew they had a chance to win it with one drive.
I see both sides, but we should've known what might happen leaving the door open (that and our FG kicker has been struggling). That's life though...

That was obvious what we were running. We had more success passing for once - a lot too!
If we would have kept our offense out there, Saban would have probably had a heart attack because they were out of timeouts and he likes to play match-up with his defensive subs.

The FG attempt was not a bad play. Whether LSU makes it or not, the problem was what happened AFTER the miss. The decision to play PREVENT DEFENSE when their defensive scheme was already shutting Bama down was the worst decision of the game. Every other call could have been nullified if LSU had just played their normal defense.
They have given up TD's in previous games employing the prevent so I'm not sure why they employed it against Bama with Bama only needing a FG to tie.
The ONLY time I can see a PREVENT D being utilized is when a team has 1 play and are a good distance away.
