I know that this is a tough call, but how many people would have risked passing for the first down here instead of rushing into a loaded box? I realize that you try the run to bleed clock and don't want them to have more time, but if you pick up a first down it's over. Mettenberger was in sync and we had been doing very well on third down passes. I'm not sure Miles wouldn't play this one differently if he had it over.

No one would be upset with either call if it worked.

Did Bama burn their last time out after that?

No doubt. And if we had passed and failed, people would be bitching that we didn't run it.

Mett and the receivers were in a zone. Our kicker was suspect. A field goal doesn't ice the game, it just means they have to score a TD. 7 yards and we win the game. 7 yards and the win is a better risk than a FG and forcing them to drive for a TD. It's hard to do that sort of risk analysis in the heat of the moment, but that's what he gets paid 3.4 million to do.

I believe they had burned the last timeout after the 2nd down play. The advantage on running and not risking the incompletion was to bleed 30+ more seconds off the clock.

Thanks for posting this. I was considering a similar thread on what others would have called. I did not have a huge problem with the call that was made - it was just predictable. I thought that the quick toss to the TE Clement was a good call (like on the Faux TD earlier in the game) or a toss sweep to Hill. I choose Hill because you dont know if he is running inside or out.

Run was right call IMO. For all the complaining about the coaching last night, the only call that was bad in my opinion was the fake FG (and even if that had worked we'd all be singing Les' praises today). The 4th and 1 Warecat and the onside kick were good calls that just weren't quite executed well enough.

Hindsight is 20/20 but I would have liked an Auburn 2007 type throw toward the endzone off play action. But playing for the 3 was probably the right call. You expect your kicker to make 40 yarders.

in hindsight yes a pass there could have been great. You make the completion you have a first down and the game is done. On the other hand if he does and its incomplete then you have the Miles haters screaming about not running and burning the extra 30 seconds off the clock.

Obviously in hindsight it's easier to say you try the pass if you knew Alabama would march right down the field anyways and score. This might be one of the things SFP mentioned when talking about playing to win. Miles rolled the dice on just about everything else, and I'm not sure I don't try to make one play to win the game. If you convert this one the game is totally over.

Run was the right call. The worse thing you can do is get an incompletion and stop the clock. Conventional wisdom says kick the field goal but I thought they should have took the delay of game and punted. It was forty five yards into the wind with a struggling kicker. Still Chavis's brain fart is what ultimately cost us. That and trying the fifty four yarder right before half.

I think you have to throw downfield because a completion wins the game. Just my opinion. It was open all game long. If we complete a ten yard pass game over. If not throw it away or scramble some time off the clock. You have to give it a shot

I was saying throw for it during the game. No way you take off nearly enough time off the clock to think your defense can comfortably just slow them down.

Game winning drive while your QB and WRs are hot and playing well, let them win it.

During the game I was screaming for a pass play.
I think that has the higher probability for a win.

I wanted a pass before it happened. If you have a chance to finish off the game you go for it, especially when we were surprisingly competent on offense. Same reason I liked going for the 4th and 1, just not the play call.
