No, it's to keep Nucky from going to jail. Dougherty is giving up Nucky as the scapegoat in order to try and save his little crying bitch underling friend from a couple episodes back. That crying guy Smith is directly tied to Remus, so by turning Mellon/Cromwell on to Remus both Remus and that guy Smith go down, and Nucky doesn't get fingered. That's why Nucky went to the female DA in the first place, to avoid taking the fall.
Nucky taking care of the distillery is actually his payment to Cromwell's character, a sweetener if you will. Cromwell's distillery is currently sitting there not being used. So Nucky will go in and run it, give Cromwell a bunch of the profits, so Cromwell will get a profit from his closed distillery without getting his hands dirty running an illegal business.

OK, got ya. I guess Daugherty is too powerful to kill, though I'm hoping he bites the bullet at some point since he should owe Nucky, not be fricking him over.

Great episode. It was fantastic from beginning to end.
Capone seeing Torio going soft. He told him his payment was light and Torio didn't say a thing about it. He knows the end is near for Torio (not his life, but his reign).
Gyp makes enough of a cameo to make a major splash at the end.
Gillian being manipulative - what she does best.
Van Alden going postal. That was classic. His woman is great.
Nucky stepping up and getting shite straight with Billie was past due, and he delivered on what has been pissing him off about her. That was good stuff and came full circle within the episode.
This episode really moved everything along. It was perfect.
During the episode, I noticed something about Owen that I had not noticed before. He reminds me of a young Sean Connery. In fact if they want to jump start the James Bond character, they should get him to be the new Bond. He would be great as James Bond.
I can't wait to see what happens next.

Agreed. And I think that's what really pissed Nucky off the most, he basically helped get Harding elected and cleaned up his mistress issues.

Ok question... Not this episode but last, it showed Harrow rushing off to find jimmy in the bath tub. Obviously he knows it wasnt really him.
What is his play now? When Gillian asked if he wanted to say any words, he said Jimmy deserved better than this, but I could tell if he was singling Gillian out or not.
What do yall think? Does he go work for Nucky now or stick around because of the kid?

And besides that, Capone in the show likes the guy a lot, no way he would kill off Torrio. Capone already showed how loyal he was to his guys by going nuts and killing the guy who beat up his friend.
I think they foreshadowed Torio's retirement when he took a vacation to Italy. The real Torio after his retirement moved to Italy for a few years in the late 20's after he gave the reigns to Capone. It think the show will follow this path. Torio does come back in the early 30's and has more contact with Capone and others.

When Nucky called him an interloper, 2 things occurred to me.
1.) I had never seen Nucky seem more put in his place than he was by Mellon, and using "interloper" made him seem slightly like a wounded little kid
2.) Using someonelses word is a very Lebowski thing to do, Donny.

Yep, I thought the same, but he's too important and powerful to be exposed by Nucky. He'll ultimately take Nucky's deal--what does he care which bootlegger goes to jail as long as the heat's off of him. And publicly calling him an interloper and kicking him out gives him plausible deniability of any involvement with Nucky--then he can contact him behind the scenes and make the deal.

Yeah, Nucky wasn't exactly being covert with that little meeting in the club, and when Mellon sent him away, I had a feeling he was gonna give the idea a good think.

Mellon is a bad-A character, even Nucky shudders in his presence.
I have a couple of questions:
A) Was there something weird about Randolph ending the meeting earlier by saying "I don't think I want to hear anymore", or was that just her trying not to hear things that might get her in trouble? I thought maybe that was a foreshadow of her turning on Nucky? Not sure, won't look much into it now.
B) I am confused about Harrow and Van Alden, and where they are going to end up as far as with which crime boss.
--Can't Van Alden get busted for selling booze to people the big guns supply? Isn't he taking away from O'Banion's consumers?

A.) Yeah, she wanted a little plausible deniability.
B.) I think O'Banion will get pissed at Van Alden, and take it out on his wife. Van Alden will pretty much go "Frankenstein near fire" like he did at the office and kill O'Banion. Capone will recruit him for doing him the favor of killing that Irish prick without Al being involved.
