Ok, this kid is going to be great, and I mean GREAT...but let's not let the honeymoon blind us totally.

These are just a few observations from watching him during some preseason play and last night:

-Athletic and lanky, but sometimes almost to a fault. In college, the sneaking off your defender would work b/c the players aren't as smart and would force a shot, resulting in a block. In the NBA, the players are smarter and will simply find the open man. I think this might have been the main reason for Monty sitting him for the long periods he sat last night (I know this doesn't mean shite, but -20 +/- last night). Too many times, he snuck off his defender and left the easy drop down pass open or was too slow on his rotation after a double team.

He went from 35+ minutes in preseason to 29 last night and I think the reason above was partly due to that. He played a lot of "roaming zone" type defense in college, so it'll take a bit for him to grow out of that and get used to the NBA style. I'm not overly worried or worried at all.

-Around the rim, great...mid-range, not so much. I think the kid has good form, arc, etc, but his jumpshooting suffers. Mostly due to not having to do it in college, and I have no doubt it will improve with repetition in practice. I'd like to see him develop this game a bit more, help spread defenses out and open up his offensive game more. Make defenses guess what he's going to do instead of know what he'll do.

Positives:
-Energy Energy Energy, man this kid is fun to watch. I was going to add his sometimes lazy approach to getting back on either offense or defense, but last night I didn't see it as an issue. The block he had on a transition play from behind was phenomenal and a perfect example of his athleticism that got him the awards/championship/1st pick.

-Rebounding, especially on the offensive end. He had 3 last night (7 total, not as many as the other night) and it's something I think we've missed in the past with this team. 2nd chance opportunities will be a huge help to this young team.

-Pick and Roll/AlleyOop. Saw a smidge of it last night in the waning moments of the game, but I expect to see us run more pick/roll with Davis in the future. Even if the oop isn't thrown, the threat is there and weakside defenders have to step into the lane to prevent it. This could possibly open up Anderson or any of our other deep threats on the wings for wide open shots. Next game, watch how teams defend it, it sort of brought me back to CP/Chandler days and defenses confused on how to actually guard it. And no, I'm not saying Vasquez/Davis is anything like the two mentioned above when it comes to the oop, I just like having the option again.

I'm sure tl;dr, but I wanted to not just look at Davis as the second coming and point out some of his flaws that I'm sure he'll work on.

Again, not worried about him at all. Typical rookie shite, I'm sure.

the shot chart shows that his mid range was decent, depending on how you define mid-range. 2-of-4 by my count. looked pretty rough around the rim at times.

much of the negatives you mentioned, like you said, will come around in time. people forget how young he is and how little time he's spend in the frame he has. 2 or 3 years, the guy will be an every year all-star.

but his energy is great, that's for sure. solid read

Thanks for the chart man, I wasn't just talking about his play last night only, but as a whole.

I think overall his "at rim" play > midrange.

Oh and positives from last night, his FT shooting was ON POINT 9-9.

talked about that in my little observations thing...the rookies were amazing at the stripe, as was the team as a whole.

Good read and I agree mostly with everything you said except

Like quail said and showed with the shot chart, I thought his mid-range shot looked impressive. After he started out the game with the two mid-range jump shots, I even made the comment to my cousin that I was at the game with that that mid-range shot reminded me of David West.

Like you said, I think he will be a GREAT player as he matures.

I will say this... His ability to score 18-21 points a game w/o a designed play being run for him (Excluding the basic Pick & Roll/Pop)is very impressive. It is a luxury to have a guy that can fill in points w/o having to have designed sets for him.

If Anthony Davis develops a David West midrange game then the league will be so much more fricked than we thought. That would be incredible to have with all of his other talents.

Makes no sense to me. However, since he's 19 years old I'm sure he will grow into his body with the resources avaialble in the NBA.

Agree, but that comes with time. He'll have to get used to the speed of the game. He's a rookie, and he is 19 (to reiterate).

Disagree. I believe the coach understands that he will have to get his body used to playing a lot of physical minutes for 82 games, rather than the 32 or so in college.

Let him get comfortable in not only the offense, but with his own team mate tendancies, and most of all the league as a whole.

I think it's super easy to pick clean everything a player does on the court from the living room, especially a rookie.

quote:

"He's only going to get better," Hornets coach Monty Williams said. "I love him because he takes losing hard, the way I do. He's in there feeling like it's the end of the world. You can't help but love guys who take it in the heart the way you do."

Makes no sense to you? I explain it pretty thorough right after.

This thread was not meant to "pick apart" everything about him, but to bring some people down to reality. He's good, going to be great, but he doesn't come without faults. Just different fun lil thread :)
