Was I the only one who watched 30 for 30: Ghosts of Ole Miss?

It wasn't the best 30 for 30, but I thought it was pretty solid. It was based on an article Wright Thompson wrote for ESPN a few years ago. It was like a 30,000 word article, and I thought it was actually better than the movie, but I'm surprised there were no other threads on the MSB.

Nope, I never check in over that clusterfrick, especially with all the private forums that were created.

THanks though, I'll check out that thread.

I avoided the secr thread

just too much ignorance in there

I thought it was rather well done. granted didn't occur at a school I root for so maybe I had a more open view

I didn't think it was bringing up the past in a bad way. Informing to me anyway

It actually made me feel kind of bad for Mississippi because most of the people were caught up on the wrong side of history and just didn't know it because they way they were raised regarding "tradition." I have to say that their football team's accomplishment that year was impressive with all that crazy bad shite going on.

I wish Thompson had gone into more detail about the protestors. He seemed to have found some extremely detailed records, and I would be curious to know what percentage of the protestors/rioters were Ole Miss students and alumni.

Seemed to be fairly low but I wish this was more established.

I thought it was actually quite disorganized. The entire show, I didn't know how they were trying to tie the first black student with an undefeated all white football team.

I have family/friends/co-workers that worked for Bull in Birmingham, so I could definitely relate to Thompson. I just felt like it was a poor sports doc because it really had nothing to do with the all white team. It was coincidence.

The long article was better than the movie.

The football scenes were spliced in kind of awkwardly. Wasn't the best editing job, IMO.

The sensationalizing scenes in the beginning were kind of over-the-top (ie the burning cross), although I understand why they were there.

Some other commentary in the end from people such as the OM student body president was stupid and unnecessary.

I watched it. I never really knew any of that went down but ESPN could have put it together better - IMHO

Thought they sort of tried to make it fit for ESPN. It seemed like it was basically a civil rights documentary. Didn't really have anything to do with the football team.

I think it would be damn near impossible to find a paper trail of who took part in a riot. They don't have sign in sheets.

I do think he did a good job showing the South, and Mississippi specifically, and its complicated history with the past. There is a fine line between honoring heritage and propping up institutional racism. But I thought it was cool that it was James Meredith telling the story about Gettysburg.

I agree with this. There is a thread on the PT about this event. If ESPN wanted to make a documentary about an SEC sporting event or team that really does tie into the Civil Rights Movement, it should been about the 1970 USC-Alabama football game or about the 1970 and 1971 Alabama football teams.

Thompson is my favorite writer. I've met the guy a few times in Oxford and he is as cool as they come. Scotch neat (I assume since its brown with no ice) with a cigar and just chills on the porch at City Grocery.

He's the kind of old school Southern writer that Oxford is famous for.

Or just the epitome of racism in the 50s/60s

I thought it was a really good 30 for 30. Didn't think it jumped around. They also didn't vilanize Ole Miss or the players, just told the story.

Another gem from the SECR thread:

quote:

Got a rebel flag Col reb tag on the car i drive.. Does that make me racist nope..

I had every intention of watching it but for some reason our DVR fricked up Tuesday night. I hope to catch it the next time it's on.
