Richard Dent: Ditka is the reason why the '80s Bears didn't win more Super Bowls

He was a winner his whole career. He was a tough guy, he played good. ... At the moment we made those decisions, we thought they were the right decisions."
Dent thought that Bears team could have won multiple Super Bowls.
"And we came back three years in a row and had home-field advantage," Dent said. "Our coach couldn't figure out the right quarterback to play. The disappointing part to me is that we only got one out of it. We should have been the first team ever to win three Super Bowls in a row. It was there for the taking, but we didn't manage that one position right.

Wasn't 86 the year Burt knocked Montana out? And the Giants had home field?
Also if iirc the trade of McMahon in 87/88 was what allowed Flutie to come in then he went to NE with Mac.

I think that's right. Montana also missed half that season with a back injury. They were so concerned about his future that they traded for Steve Young that off season.
Funny how when people look back they think SF was the team of the decade, Montana was the GOAT and assume they dominated every year. In reality after losing to Minnesota in the 87 playoff's, there was talk they should start Young in 88. That year it was debated whether SF or Wash would be the team of the decade. 11 games into the 88 season they were 6-5. They finished 10-6, tied with the Saints and Rams, but SF won the 3 team tie breaker. They wouldn't have even made the playoffs with out Young winning the Minnesota game with his great 49 yd TD run. But they did and Montana hit John Taylor for the Super Bowl winning TD.

Jay Schroeder of all people (as a Raiders fan I know - "Jay Schroeder can look like a combination of Roger Staubach and Joe Montana one time and a combination of Laurel and Hardy another--sometimes in the same game." - Jim Murray) drove the Skins the length of the field to victory at the end.

Ditka thought danny weurffel and the 2 billy joes were good qbs. Ditka knows about as much about the qb position as les miles. Clueless

I don't know game you are remembering but that's not how it happened. Montana only missed one pass on that final drive and that pass was thrown out of bounds because no one was open. He hit Rice down to the 20, Craig down to the 10, and then Taylor in the back of the end zone for the go ahead touchdown.

And Montana did not play in that playoff game in 1986. That's probably why they lost so bad to the Bears.

Playoffs every year except the strike year of '82
To be fair, I'd say that's pretty dominant in a league so full of parity like the NFL.
