Romney Taunted by Reporters Over FEMA

by KEITH KOFFLER on OCTOBER 31, 2012, 9:28 AM

Gov. Mitt Romney was taunted Tuesday by reporters who wanted to know if he would abolish FEMA.

According to the Washington Post, Romney was asked repeatedly whether he would end federal disaster assistance – and scolded for not answering – as Hurricane Sandy wrought destruction across the upper East Coast:

quote:

Several others again asked Romney whether he would eliminate FEMA.

“Governor, you’ve been asked 14 times. Why are you refusing to answer the question?” one asked.

Romney ignored the reporters’ queries and continued loading up the truck. Earlier, during the event, he ignored similar queries.

It’s hard to imagine the press corps addressing President Obama in this manner, even when he was just a candidate for president.

The same mainstream presidential campaign media that has failed to ask Obama – or even, in recent days, his press secretary – about Benghazi was hot on Romney’s heals for something Romney never said he would do.

Rather, what Romney said during a June 2011 GOP primary debate was that he would increase the share of state responsibility for disaster management.

quote:

Moderator John King: FEMA is about to run out of money, and there are some people who say do it on a case-by-case basis and some people who say, you know, maybe we’re learning a lesson here that the states should take on more of this role. How do you deal with something like that?

Romney: Absolutely. Every time you have an occasion to take something from the federal government and send it back to the states, that’s the right direction. And if you can go even further and send it back to the private sector, that’s even better. Instead of thinking in the federal budget, what we should cut — we should ask ourselves the opposite question. What should we keep? We should take all of what we’re doing at the federal level and say, what are the things we’re doing that we don’t have to do? And those things we’ve got to stop doing, because we’re borrowing $1.6 trillion more this year than we’re taking in.

Notice I have bolded the question Romney was actually responding to. What he gave was a standard conservative reply about de-federalization, a common-sense approach that assumes states understand best what their needs are.

What’s more, campaign aides had already told reporters Monday that Romney would not abolish FEMA.

I have heard this bull shite over and over and over. I love that all the sources hanging on this topic have no clue how FEMA operates. I have more experience than I ever want dealing with FEMA after Katrina and to put it politely. The organization is a waste of taxpayer dollars. They over spent on resources, over spent on projects, over audited projects, denied numerous common sense ways to correct damage areas and are still nosing around the Coast.

A point to having it more controlled by state. Look at both MS and LA. In MS the immediate and long term aftermath has been managed much better than LA. I attribute most of that to state/local officials being in control better...not FEMA.

The man is attacked in gathering supplies to help with relief efforts...says a lot how much he will be attacked during his Presidency over the most trivial things...

The double standard in coverage and accountability will hit a all time low with the man that defeated the medias messiah in less than a week...

Seriously dude, you must love what you do for a living to have to cohabitate with the idiots in the press core. I wouldn't last 5 mins there before telling someone something along the lines of "You're fricking Stupid."

Poster of the year for this election coverage.

How convenient that you left out the part where Romney alluded to FEMA and Federal disaster relief spending as "immoral".

And, oh, if you're so sure of his support for FEMA why didn't he just answer the damn question?

Have friend that did GIS work for a company that got contracted out by FEMA to do flood plain analysis. For him to walk across the hall and get a map, he had to fill out a form that had to be approved by three different people. Just one of the many wastes he had to put up with.

I just got in to an argument with a couple of libs about this...trying to berate a man for making an effort of any sort to bring in non perishables and basic items of need, or aid of any kind is beyond reason. I really, really don't get it.

Yes, and he included FEMA and Federal disaster relief as part of that immoral spending.... which is perhaps a valid position, but the OP here is trying to have her cake and eat it, too.

So Obama shows face in New York, and hes a hero and not doing ANYTHING remotely political.

Meanwhile, Romney holds canned good drives at his campaign stops, and hes evil?
