I have a 444 & love it. But BIL got a 35 & we've shot it. Not much diverence IMO so what ever you decide won't matter

six one way and half a dozen the other, it is your choice. Differences are not enough to worry about which one to get.

I'm going to wrench your thread and suggest either a .45-70 or .44mag for ammo availability and selection.

.44 mag is the ideal 'primitive' round inside of 100 yards. Those light rifles are very rough on the shoulder.

Look at the ballistics of a 35 Whelen vs a 444. The choice is obvious if you ask me.

Both guns being sighted in at 200 yds and shooting 250 gr bullets. @ 300 yds You will have to aim over 26in high with the 444 and with the 35 you will have to aim less than 10in high.

That being said if you don't think you'll have to make a shoot over 200 yds then maybe ballistics isn't the deciding factor for you.

35 Whelen by a long shot. They are flatter shooting and kick a lot less. Most ppl with 45-70s and 444s will be trading them out for 35s in the next few years.

Hence the 'primitive' being in quotes.

It is a legal caliber for primitive arms season

44 mag is definitely a PW. Just not near as common as 45-70, 444, and 35 Whelen.

The most expensive one you can stomach buying for a rifle you'll use two weeks a year.

I thought about getting the 35 Wheelen but my buddy just got a 444 and LOVES it. I think I'll wait for the "flood" of 444's.
