Hi guys, this is a serious question for the older fans, those who remember a different style of football than what we see now (as exemplified by Drew Brees and the Saints). Younger fans don't remember seeing guys like Earl, Dickerson, Bo or Herschel, so they probably wouldn't get the gist of it.

There was a time, where if you happened to find a tailback like Jeremy Hill, you scrapped whatever offense you used to run, put his arse in the I formation, and ran him 25+ times a game. And to hell with his long-term NFL prospects. And if you had a complementary back like Ford, you did the same with him, to the tune of maybe 40 carries total a game. Think Pony Express at SMU.

The idea is, forget about trying to get the pass going, especially in the first half. Go almost straight I with Copeland at FB, and 2 WRs to keep them honest, and commit to pounding them all half. Hill, Ware, Hilliard (if he's right), Hill some more, with toss sweeps to Ford, until you have to punt. Keep doing that until you fall behind by double digits.

If we don't fumble, and our defense plays like it has, that 10 point deficit might never surface. Then it's a matter of our line run-blocking decently, and whether they have enough depth on defense to keep making the play over and over.

And just so people don't panic about the suggestion, let Mett throw the occasional pass, starting sometime in the second quarter. On a play-action bomb to Boone or Beckham.

Not necessarily saying this has to be the gameplan; I'm asking- could this work?

How did that work out for us on 1/9/12?

We ran the ball 10 straight times from the end of the 3rd quarter well into the 4th quarter.

We've already been down that road. We got SQUADOOSH.

Those who do not learn from history are DOOMED to repeat it.

It would against most teams, but not Bama.

There needs to be a bit more creativity and Mett/WRs has to step up and make some plays.

Good post though.

I would personally like to see one of our backs (Hill for me personally, but any of them really) get 25+ carries a game. Even if all his carries came in the second half after the rotation of others backs take the first half. I really want to see Hill get into a groove for an entire game. Instead of breaking 1 50 yrd TD maybe he can get a second a third.

I know there are pros and cons both ways... I just want to see it.

I think that's what they are expecting. Saban's mindset has to be "Stop the run, make LSU beat us by passing." I'm not saying it can't be done, I just feel like LSU has to make several complete passes early to keep the defense honest.

That's why I named Hill. Ware is a nice banger, Ford has good speed... Hill just seems to have that "it" factor. Big, powerful, churning runs, and can break away. Sure, to do it every game would detract from the number of years he could play pro, but I'd love to see him get 25 carries a game here. Watch him start to get comfortable, and just start destroying defenses.

For the other guy who referenced 1/9/12, that's not what happened. For one thing, lots of penalties on the line made it more than 10 yards to get a 1st down. For another, running JJ (or any other QB) is not hammering away with a big I-back down after down. Hilliard is too soft and slow to do it, and Ware doesn't QUITE have it in him either. He's more of a 20 yd guy when he breaks the line of scrimmage (kinda like George Rogers or William Andrews were), not the guy who will take it the distance. Hill just has a subtle shift in his runs when he hits daylight, and he's starting to remind me of Earl Campbell back in the day. And Campbell wore defenses out the more he ran.

I think Hill could punish a defense, including Bama's.

edit to add: of course, Campbell could barely walk after his career ended in the NFL, which is the con in running Hill so much. But for those few years he was at his peak, he was absolutely the most feared back in the league.

Probably not, but I'm not opposed to giving it a shot. Personally, I'd like to see a bunch of misdirection and/or trick plays.

I don't mind trick plays

BUT I can't stand it when a team is running the ball with authority and then they take a 5 yard loss on first down with a reverse that gets sniffed out

Misdirection is a must though. We'll need to run some counter plays in the run game if we're going to have success IMO

Being white trash has nothing to do with income level, it's a state of mind, ie. Jerry Jones. Stinkin rich, yes. White trash, absolutely.

We should have him at least 20 carries a game. Hell Ware was averaging over that every game up to his suspension last year.

I like the power football philosophy. However, in the modern era of safeties that hit like linebackers, linebackers that run like safeties, defensive ends that are freaks of nature, and interior linemen who need a front end loader to move them off the line of scrimmage, you need a balanced attack. If the defense can predict what you're going to do, they can stop you.

Today's college defenses are too specialized and advanced to just do that. With two top programs like lsu and Bama the margin of error/victory is usually determined by coaching. Saban had the same philosophy when he was here and his first few years at Bama. 3 offensive coordinators later and he's agreeable to letting his OC open it up.
