Who has shot both.. What are differences. Looking at options for something different to shoot some. Advantages/disadvantages of each.

Ps.. Dont say 270 or 30-06 or any other round. I have all in the safe and just looking for something different to use time to time. This will not be a primary gun for anything!

7mm08 for deer.

.25-06 for fun. It's a sweet arse caliber but bullet selection is critical for deer. A very viable and soft shooting long range caliber though.

I haven't killed a deer with either, but my 2 cents are:

Used for only deer or simalar size animals, 25-06 will shoot flatter.
Used for larger than deer,(elk) I'd rather 7mm-08 for it's larger bullets.

Hmm
I normally take my 308 or 30-30 deer hunting around here. Also have a 270wsm if hunting some long pipe lines or something. Not looking for a deer primary gun, just something diff. But the 7mm-08 sounds tempting if it would be good for elk, i am looking at going on an elk hunt in the next few years

The 25-06 is pretty badly overbore. That means it is LOUD out of a 22" barrel. Great cartridge but it really has nothing on the 7mm-08. The 7mm-08 is a great short range, middle range, and long range cartridge for pretty much everything short of the big bears in North America.

I use a 7mm-08 most of the time and a 270WSM now and then for longer shots.
7mm-08 short action 120-150 grain bullet
25-06 long action 85-120 grain bullet

for Louisiana white tail the 7mm-08 is a better choice IMHO

It is adequate for elk with tough bullets.

If elk is more likely than varmints go 7mm08

I'd use the .308 you already have for elk though.

308 would trump 7-08 for elk.

The 25-06 is a sweet little cartridge though. Very fun. Get both if you can.

Since you have a .308 get the .25-06

It's an awesome caliber to shoot. Owning a 7mm08 and .308 is a little redundant.

If you are just looking for a gun to blast away at long range targets, I would lean much harder toward 25-06.

Also Downshift, I knew you'd regret selling that rilfe.

lil chou.. been shooting the 7mm08... has taken 11 deer with only 2 took more than 5 steps - none more than 10 steps..

shot placement - 2 shots were above 250 yards one dropped, one jumped once and crumpled.

but HE wants to move up to 280, 270, or 308.. and shot a 25-06... but did not like it like others..
