Pele had 75 in '58

Muller had 85 in '72

Will Messi break the record?

I don't think so. He will beat Pelé, however. I love that soon to be fact. Love it.

He has 15 remaining games in the calendar year to get 15 goals. I don't doubt Messi's ability to average a goal a game. He may get some rest in a few Copa del Rey matches, and once FCB clinches first in their Champions League matches. However, that can easily be offset by a few hat tricks here and there.

Easily breaks Pele's, itll be close to 85.

How many goals could Messi score in an MLS season, realistically. Given the talent he would be playing with and against.

50 in a 34 match regular season?

5. He can't do it on a wet, windy night in Stokadelphia.

I think that's what would hold him down the most. I think Ronaldo would fair better with MLS talent then messi

Exactly. Not that he doesn't create some goals on his own, but the service would be a big drop off. A player like him can disappear on a bad team that can't get him the ball.

Given the poor state of some MLS defenses; Brad Davis, Mauro Rosales, Alan Gordon or hell even GAM could put Messi in goal scoring positions.

Guys Chris Wondolowski is close to setting the goals in a season record. Wondo gets decent service from his midfield, and takes advantage of bad defending. Messi could score as a sweeper keeper against Toronto FC.

He may never when a world cup (I suppose he has 2 chances left), but I think there is no doubt he will go down as the best player to ever lace a boot. We are lucky.
