Intellectual Progressives: what science is good science?

so i was watching the intro to the last Bill Maher and there was a discussion about California's Prop 37, which apparently will require labeling food that contains genetic alterations as such

now, to a truly open minded person, GMOs should be one of the most significant advancements in society...at least in my lifetime (approximately 30 years).

are they perfect? no

are they still amazing? yes

this science allows us to make more food for the exploding population on this earth. this technology is going to be responsible for saving more lives than almost any other technology in human history

in my mind, only a dullard, a closed minded redneck, or a person who hates the truly poor in this world should be against the proliferation of GMOs. who do we see against GMOs? why those science-hating progressives

this is just one example of the ridiculous notion that progressivism is pro science and non-progressives are dullards

who decides what science is cool/progressive/ok and which science is evil/discriminatory/bad?

Yep. Anyone who disagrees is selling something.

are you implying that GMOs should not have to be labeled? i agree that they are good and whatnot, but i also think it should be clearly labeled incase you are skeptical. personally, i don't give a shit, i eat all food.

""organic"" or ""organically grown"" are two of the dumbest terms ever

i think this is an opportunity for food without GMOs to sell that point in their own advertising

i don't see why that solution isn't optimal

idiots.

This is not a liberal/conservative thing. Both sides ignore science that somehow doesn't agree with their beliefs.

but the popular myth is that progressives are the group of intellectual superiority because of their use of science over religion/folk tales, etc. i didn't create the label, but you can't deny this framing/perception

Look at the liberals selective use of science in the global warming wars....and the DDT controversey....not to mention the ever-popular conveniently-timed scientific study....

I find it fascinating that a lot of people who consume all sorts of reconstituted foods and edible chemical inventions, and spray all sorts of insecticides and colognes and sunscreens on their skin, and pop pills with long extravagant names, and stick medicine-saturated stuff into their body cavities, have objections to GMO's.

Genetic modification of foodstuffs is good science.

in the intro segment on Maher they dropped the dreaded "C" word that you just did

chemicals aren't scary, or bad. they can be used to make scary and bad things, but "chemicals" shouldn't have this label

if somebody starts a discussion about things like GMOs by dropping the C word, i find it hard to believe anything else they say

yes, it is funny

What's wrong with supporting transparent labeling and supporting GMOs?

Also, regarding "good science," a lot of it suggests that certain GMOs aren't particularly good for you. There's a lot of nuance in this kind of thing.

Science is good if it does NOT produce profits for large corporations or religious establishments. If it works to destroy them it's really, awesome science.

Seriously, most of the criticisms I've heard about GMOs are how they benefit Monsanto, ADM, or other producers. I've never heard a reasoned argument using genetics.

The anti-GMO movement is about as "scientific" as global warming.

I won't eat this corn, but excuse me while i go drop some acid and smoke weed grown with all kinds of chemicals and who knows what else, laced with PCP

my cousin is a super liberal and constantly posts about how "evil" Monsanto is and how GMOs will kill everybody. i'm glad to see this isn't really a widespread liberal belief, or is it?

well it's 2 different discussions:

1. the GMOs are demonized
2. debating the labeling issue

i don't see why organic foods don't just advertise the fact that they don't contain GMOs. why not use the market to disseminate your information and use market methods to inform the public?

didn't the obama admin. do some kind of massive deregulation of organic foods and their labeling/marketing? as in it's way easier to be able to call a food product "organic."

Only progressives believe this. Most liberals I have met are self-important narcissists who have highly inflated opinions of themselves and are completely dismissive of other people's opinions. To paraphrase William F. Buckley, liberals believe in diversity of opinions. They just can't accept that there are actually other opinions.

most of this involves the assumption that man has significantly affected the climate and denying any other possibility as kook science

i see the climate change debate as completely unsettled
