Is it ever to soon to apply for a better position in a company?

I've been at the company for 5 months and a sales position has recently come open should I apply or is it to soon?

IMO, it depends on the culture of the company. If it’s a dynamic, fast changing environment, I'd say go for it.

If not, you might sour some relationships and if you don’t get it, your remaining time in the current position might be a little tougher. Your boss might decide you are a “short timer” and stop giving you anything interesting to do and stop “investing” in you in general.

If your current position makes you miserable, then it’s worth a shot, but again, if you don’t get the new job your current one is likely to get worse.

As an exec I would frown on it unless I thought you were the person for the job- in that case I would be encouraging you to apply for it
