I was in Carlsbad, CA last weekend for a wedding and I spent a few nights at The Pizza Port. If you're ever in the area(it's right off Interstate 5 in Carlsbad), you have to stop by. Just ignore the hipsters/California folk, the beer selection is definitely worth it. I would put this up there with Toronado in San Francisco as a must visit beer joint out west.

They also have the Pizza Port bottle store right next door to the restaurant that has some of the best sours and craft brews around. I had several of the Russian River sours(Supplication, Beatification and Temptation), as well as Lost Abbey Angel's Share and Veritas. It's the first time in while that I've felt like a kid in a candy store while browsing for beers. It put the Specs warehouse here in Houston to shame.

Unfortunately, they're having some liquor license issues, so I wasn't able buy any of the Russian River and Lost Abbey to bring back home. You can't leave with them, you have to drink them in the shop or on the patio. I did get a few other beers, including Pliny the Elder, from a fairly well stocked local liquor store. It wasn't near the haul I was hoping for, bu all in all, the trip was a success.

Anybody have another beer mecca that is worth the visit? I love checking out places like this.

I've always heard great things about Falling Rock Taphouse in Denver, it's on my list along with those places you mentioned in CA.

Between Pizza Port/Port Brewing/Lost Abbey, they took home 10 medals at GABF last weekend. I haven't had any of the Pizza Port brews, but their Port and Lost Abbey stuff have all been winners.

Falling Rock was definitely a "kid in a candy store" experience. It was hard not to just go Pliny on tap for every beer, but I had to try some other stuff.

Another awesome thing about Pizza Port- they will host a couple of beer festivals each year. I have been to two, a Real Ale Festival and a Strong Ale Festival. The Strong Ale was 60 beers all above 8.5% (the strongest being 15% I believe). Both were awesome times that weren't overly crowded because they sell a set number of tickets.

Oh, and all of the beers entered into their festivals were coming from local breweries that will probably never be brewed again.

The thing about that selection though is that just about everything on the wall or in the bottle list is a great beer. Too hard to pick from most of the time. Food isn't bad either.

Thanks! I figured Denver/Fort Collins would have to have some great spots. If I'm ever up there I'll have to venture over to Falling Rock.

You can definitely tell why, their stuff is just gold.

It was fun talking about beer with some of the locals that were at the wedding. Pretty much every one of them had a pretty legit home-brew setup. They make way more than the legal amount and just trade their brews with each other. It was neat.

In fact, two beers that were on tap at the wedding were home brews. People out there are just beer crazed and I loved checking it all out.

ETA:

I have a 6 pack of these that I don't see making it past tomorrow's LSU game

Dude, you won't make it past the LSU game if you drink 6 pints of Pliny. Trust me on this.

Drink 2, then move on. Save the rest for later.
