Any of you guys know what is the minimum amount of insurance required to have for a hunting club? Also how much is your premium? I am thinking of starting a hunting and fishing club but know that insurance is gonna be a bitch.

It's not that bad. I can't give you any exact numbers because I really don't know, but it's usually a much smaller bill than your leases.

NRA can help you out with it.

They'll help pay club insurance or help you determine the cost?

No, they do club insurance and will tell you what to pay them. From what I understand it is pretty affordable.

This type of insurance is a curious thing. It really doesn't cover anything that actually happens. Gives the landowner a free defense though. I suppose that's the real drive behind it.

Yea that's pretty much the only reason for it. We would loose a couple leases if we didn't have insurance, and it gives you lots of leverage when you start competing for a lease with a bunch of disorganized groups.

I've never heard of anyone filing a claim with their hunting club insurance though. Not even sure you can do that.

I defended one through appeal. Dude shoots a hog running down a fenceline. Goes to retrieve said hog. Finds a dude on a Big Red with a bullet hole in his left calf.

The Louisiana Forestry Association also does insurance. I don't know about their rates or competitiveness, but...

Shooter an OB poster?

Was there actually a hog and it was a miss/passthrough or was it the shooter's imagination?

Contact the Forest Landowners Assn. 1,000,000 on club and 1,000,000 for landowner runs me $261 a year.

No hog. Clean pass through. No bone involvment.

We had an expert that said something along these lines:

When we see part of something, the brain can and will often fill in the rest from past experiences.

The dude was absolutely convinced he saw a hog. No safety seminars would have changed that.

Shooter had homeowners. They paid their $100K pretty quickly. The case went to trial against the club and club insurer. Judge found coverage pre-trial. Jury found liability on shooter and 5% on club. Reversed on appeal. 704 So.2d 247
No. My name does not appear in the decision.

Ok maybe I should have worded better. It would be a club that would not have leased land. Kind of like a bass club. We used to have the lafourche green trout and hunting club. There was a clubhouse that would have meetings and suppers. They used to have a family fishing tournament and a duck hunting contest. There was a place to weigh in ducks daily. Top 3 weights per species. The club used to raise money to help out with the local public lake. Raised fingerling bass, sprayed water lillies, drove pilings to keep the pass open. My dad was the president for quite a while. He said the price of insurance really put the club out of business.

Never even thought about weighing ducks. Is there a big range within 1 species?
