So how much would it cost to go to Brazil to see the WC, stay a week and see 2-3 matches?
Anyone checked into all that yet?
Germans?
not an OT baller.

At least $3k from what I've read. Pretty hard to predict how much hotels will be.

what are some of the better venues outside of Rio that should be considered?

I am.
$5k+ needed from what I can tell.

You'll likely want to stay in the south since Brazil is too big to really travel to multiple cities all over the country in a week. I'd probably recommend finding places near Rio to visit (day trips), and staying in Rio for matches.
Sao Paulo would be another option relatively close to Rio.

so those two little towns on the coast up north are a bad idea? Natal? Recife?
some of the travel packages are absurd

For a week? An exaggerated number unless you are buying one of those travel packages. Obviously varies a lot depending on what you want to do. Traveling to multiple host cities will add some, but I read that Brazil has a pretty good train pass that is relatively affordable. Read something on Twitter from someone who goes to Brazil every summer and pays around $2000 for flights. Just checked flights for next summer and you can find flights at $1200 roundtrip from Nola to Rio.
You're number is essentially $500 a day assuming flights are in the $2000 range. I've done a shitload of traveling and unless we do things completely different, you should be able to get by on significantly less than that.

I can assure you that every air carrier on Earth will charge a premium for their flights to Brazil - which aren't cheap as it is. Brazil's market is booming, and thus airlines can charge more for airfare.

Will be my 21st bday present from my dad, he's already started to map it out
2 weeks for 2-3 matches will be ab $5k

I agree. Still don't think you should be paying $5k for a week unless you go to 5+ matches and stay in fine hotels.

Can your dad give me the same 21st birthday present?

that's an awesome experience you and your dad will never forget

Also depends what stage you go for. I read that group matches are going to be around $100-150. Obviously the deeper you get in the tournament that number will continue to rise.

Flights for June of '13 out of ATL to Rio are around $1000-1200 or so.
I dont guess you should assume it should be the same the following summer.

They won't be the same, but I don't think they're going to double or anything. Brave can help us out a little bit more with that since he's actually in the airline business.
I don't think it will be difficult to go with a $1500-2000 budget (not counting travel), stay 5-7 nights, catch 2-3 matches and still stay in a reasonable hotel/hostel.
This is all speculation though since I don't believe they've released ticket prices yet, we don't know how much hotels will be and who knows what airline prices will be.

I see pricing figures, but I'm not exactly hip to the pricing game (i.e. trends).
My semi-educated prediction? American carriers (not just my own) will add capacity (bigger planes, extra frequency). If the Brazilian infrastructure is good, they shouldn't have to add destinations. My employer has a good partnership with a Brazilian airline for feeder flights anywhere in the country, and we only have to serve three major destinations on our planes.
Beast is right, though. $2000 isn't a crazy thought for a standard coach ticket next summer.

If it's anything like SA it will be pretty close to that number I'd imagine. The flights during the WC were almost double what they were at the usual time. Hotels obviously were MUCH more expensive during that time and were hard to come by even going through travel agencies over a year out.

this would be alot easier if I could leave my wife at home
Posted on 10/17/12 at 9:32 pm to RandySavage
It won't be because I've been to SA, and normal flights are already in the $1800-2200 range (from Nola).
Like I said, barring the fact that flights go up to $3k, $5k seems excessive unless you are planning to do a lot of extras.
Go with a friend or stay in a hostel. That immediately cuts your room stays in half. Eat cheaply. Stay in one city. Find free tours/museums/activities. Budgeting isn't hard.

We'll know before long. I guarantee you the pricing nerds are already running more projections that you'd imagine. Flights won't actually go on sale (at least for my carrier) until about July 2013.
Also remember this: The World Cup just isn't in one city. The Olympics are. Olympic fares would easily double, maybe triple. World Cup will be a bit more spread out. So expect an increase, but it may not be life-changing.
The big three destinations are Sao Paulo (GRU), Rio de Janeiro (GIG) and to a lesser extent Brasilia (BSB).
