Saw where Joe's was closed again in Livonia, this time I assume for good? Didn't see anything about this around and wondered if anyone had any intel on what happened this time around?

There was a thread way back when it closed, but I don't recall anyone knowing a solid reason.

Joe and Diane (original owners) have been out of it for a lot of years. I never returned after they retired. I have heard that over the years since then it has been ok, good, and bad at different times.

A shame. Spent many special occasions there. I remember when Oprah was there. I believe she wanted crab cakes.

I have only been there a handfull of times between 2000-2005. It was ok, but not great. I guess the allure of making a trip that far to eat kinda got old to most people.

Still, hate to see a cultural place like that close.

I love the atmosphere of the restaurant as much as I enjoyed the food when it was good. Neat place.

The heyday was in the late 80s through the mid-90s. The first restaurant was the Red Barn in a tiny building on the highway. Then they moved into the Dreyfus Store. While the Major's owned it everything was always really good, and people from BR never really stopped going out there. On a weekend night when they were in the Red Barn there would be people outside sitting on their cars with ice chests waiting for a table because there was no room inside. Good times, great food.

sadly, this is what is happening to good small town restaurants. Makes me sad.

When they first moved into the store, there was a ton of old merchandise and stuff left from the general store. They used some of that in the decor. They really wanted to keep the general store feel. There was a big roll of paper the Dreyfus' used to wrap and pack people's purchases in the store. It had the store name and some advertising art on it -- I have a framed square of it in my kitchen. It was a neat place.

They had a really unique place, for it's time.

Some things were still very good, but others were pitiful. The bisque and gumbo had gone way down and I got oysters rock once and they were topped with spinach madeline. We sent them back and they took them off the bill.

The last time I went there-- a few years back-- I had one of the worst dining experiences of my life. I almost thought I was on Punk'd. It was that godawful.

It was a solid place back in the day, but I think it was past due to be put out of its misery.

I'd like to see someone open a successful place there again. I'm sad that it's gone. I ate there in April. Some of it was very good. Fried food was still good. Funny thing was that my bisque was good. Another diner ordered a bowl as a meal and when hers came out, it was a totally different color and flavor. Very strange.

On that last visit I had their cheesecake-- which if you recall was really quite good-- and they forgot to add the sugar. It was a serious WTF moment for me. How do you forget to add the sugar????????!

Reading the thread title after 13 beers, it looks like "Julia Louis-Dreyfus". II clicked expecting something Seinfeld related. Disappointed.

A friend drove a group of us over in his RV a few times. It was a blast, I miss that place.
