The U.S. Postal Service is, by law, an "independent establishment" of the executive branch. The agency doesn't normally use tax dollars for operations, except for its loan from Treasury. In 2005, the Postal Service had no debt, officials said.

Competing Senate and House bills would allow the agency to access an overfunded retirement plan that has an extra $11 billion ready to be used.

They are going to have to ditch some delivery days. They may have to go to 3-4 delivery days per week.

from what i remember, congress passed a law that said USPS had to pre-fund all of their retirement accounts. Which is why they have the 11 billion or whatever it is available.

Who actually needs mail everyday? if it's that important send it fed ex, they could probably get by with two days a week delivery. I only check my box about once a week and have mailed maybe 3 things in the last 6 months.

This.
They are bad, but not nearly as bad as the media is making them out to be.

I def. believe there needs to be a drop to 5 or maybe even 4 day a week delivery.

I have a friend who is a mailman. If I didn't have a college degree and couldn't work in the oilfield, that's what I would do.

They get paid WAYYYYY too much.

Agreed between paying bills online and email we have seen the steady decline of the USPS.

They are not allowed to get more efficient.

They are beholden to congress for every damn little thing. If they were allowed to close a ton of tiny post offices and reduce delivery frequency in rural areas, they could do MUCH better.

Dont blame the guys running it, blame your duly elected representatives.

From Wikipedia:

"Since the 2006 all-time peak mail volume,[5] after which Congress passed the "Postal Accountability and Enhancement Act",[6] (which mandated $5.5 billion per year to be paid into an account to pre-fund retiree health-care, 75 years into the future"

What other company or government agency would ever pre-fund health care for employees 75 years into the future?

The problem isn't the postal service, the problem is congress.

Don't forget the political pressure to keep the cost of a stamp artificially low. If private companies were allowed to deliver to mailboxes, I guarantee you they'd charge more than 46 cents for a first class letter.
