What challenges will we see from the aTm defense??

i know, from what i hear, they have some good defensive ends but other than that i haven't really heard much about their D, what are we going up against?

LB Corps is very solid:
-Sean Porter (SAM) - led team in sacks last year, very fast and physical, can take up multiple blockers to open lanes for the MIKE.
-Jonathan Stewart (MIKE) - Solid, but not spectacular MIKE LB in the base 4-3. Was forced to play in the Nickel against LA Tech due to Steven Jenkins' suspension and he struggled against small quick TB for the Bulldogs. Regularly makes plays in the passing and running game in the 4-3.
-Steven Jenkins (WILL) - Very fast and physical linebacker who excels at both interior and edge pressure. Sorely missed against LA Tech for his play in the Nickel and in blitz packages. Probably the best physical specimen at LB but sometimes struggles to stay in his lane.

Secondary is all dependent on injuries:
Possible Injuries:
-Deshazor Everett (Shoulder) - our most physical corner at the point of attack and against screens. 2nd best cover corner behind Devante Harris. Has started at Boundary Safety much of the year.
- BS - Steven Campbell (Lingering Concussion Symptoms) - Fastest player in the secondary, but struggled with missed tackles early in the year before being suspended vs. SMU. Has not returned since.
Probable Starters:
-CB - Dustin Harris - Senior who has struggled blowing coverage in the past but has been passable this season this far except against exceptional receivers.
-FS - Steven Terrell - Senior starter who is solid in coverage and has a few picks but struggles tackling larger players. Has improved play lately, though.
-BS - Toney Hurd Jr. - Very smart and physical safety who normally starts at Nickel. Made the game-saving pick at Ole Miss
-CB - Devante Harris or Otis Jacobs - Devante Harris is a physical freshman cover corner who only struggles with PI calls and an occasional missed tackle, while Otis Jacobs is a transfer who is big and physical, but can struggle with 1 on 1 when he lines up too far off of the ball.
-Dime - Floyd Raven - Probably our most physically talented player in the secondary, but struggles at corner due to tentative play and poor understanding of the defense at times. Lines up as an LB in the Dime and plays underneath zone most of the time, where he can cut loose and has help over the top.

-Rush DE - Damontre Moore - You know all about this guy. One of the premier pass rushers in the nation, but is also very solid in the run game, leading the team in tackles (17 vs. LA Tech) and leads the nation in TFL.
- DT - Spencer Nealy - Gritty, high-motor senior who volunteered to move inside after playing the 5-technique in the 3-4 last season. Will not quit and is tenacious, but is not the most physically talented guy. Looks and acts like Chris Farley and is a vocal leader on the team.
-NG - Kirby Ennis - solid, but not spectacular guy who unselfishly takes on double-teams and holds the line so that LBs and DEs can make plays.
-SDE - Julian Obioha - FR hailing from New Orleans Brother Martin HS - has been very solid setting the edge and maintaining contain on the outside. Nothing but upside for this guy.
Let me know if there are any players I left out (backups) that you would like to hear about.

Secondary is not very good. They give too much cushion and tackle poorly. After the Ole Miss game our DC mentioned "tightening up the coverage" in the secondary for La Tech and decreasing the amount of cushion. The DBs apparently didn't get the memo.
LBs are pretty good, but not great. Hope to see an inspired game from them on Saturday.
Starting DL is fairly good but depth is very thin.
You can expect to see a fair amount of blitzing and we should have a little more success with it than we did against La Tech. Their QB doesn't hold the ball long enough for the blitz to get there unless one of the front seven is uncovered and even then he has a quick release.
Run defense has been inconsistent, tackling needs improvement. Pass defense has been mediocre to poor but no teams other than Arkie to some extent and La Tech to great extent have been able to really exploit it.

Notice that SC had no permimeter contain, though. They had 9 men literally inside the hashes on nearly every snap. If you happened to get past the first level you were pretty much gone.
A&M's key has to be to get some key stops, particularly in the Red Zone. Pressure on Mettenberger can get him off rhythm so we can start with Cover 1 Run Blitzes, which with Steven Jenkins in the game have been very effective.
Our Rush D has been exposed the last two weeks because we were in the Nickel or Dime for about 99% of both of those games.
I think A&M needs to score 24 or so to feel comfortable in this game, and that is challenging, but feasible if Johnny limits turnovers and we get Ryan Swope back from a concussion.
This game may even come down to special teams. I think it will be within 1 possession either way.
