I'm going to be hunting some squirrel this weekend for the first time in a long time.

I got permission to use a buddy's land on the condition that I take his 11 year old son with me, which is no big deal.

I have never hunted with a child before (I'm 26), but that's not my concern. I'm under the impression that the child doesn't need a license and I'm fine hunting with him if I have my hunter's safety card on me. Is that true? Also, and this is probably stupid, but we do get to each shoot and keep 8 right?

I'm going to be in an area notorious for game wardens, so I don't want to misstep and end up with a ticket on some technicality.

Yes, I have my license. I thought I read somewhere on the WLF website that you are required to possess a Hunter's Safety Card if you are hunting with someone under 16.

I was clarifying that. Thanks for the help!

I would stand behind him at all times, and watch his barrel. Make sure he kills his 8, and do not shoot into his limit just because he doesn't get them all.

He doesn't need a license and you can keep 8 each.

Make him fetch your squirrels. That's what my dad taught me kids were for.

Try to make sure he gets his 8. If he has a good time, you may be invited to bring him again. If I were you, I'd only shoot when two or more were in range. Other than that let him sling some bb's. Next time he wants to go and dad can't make it, you get the invite to shoot more tree rats

I thought it was 8 per licensed hunter??? I may be wrong on that....Hope I am...Have fun, it will be a blast...definately keep the young man in front of you at all times...I'd suggest finding a good feed tree, cleaning out a round spot next to an adjacent tree and cop a squat for a while...sit still and let them start feeding....

Actually, I think the kid is the one taking me hunting

He has apparently been slaughtering the squirrels daily, and he wanted someone to hunt with.

I just didn't want to get myself in trouble the first time out in a long time.

The way it goes with kids is, you as an adult need a license, since you're not 65 you had to have had hunter safety just to get the license, any kid under 16 with you is covered under your license. Wear orange.

"Go get me a beer son"

"why?"

"Why the hell do you think I brought you here?"

You are supposed to have your license AND hunter's safety card on you when you hunt, regardless of who is with you.

Let him shoot em all. Watching kids kill squirrels is more fun than doing it yourself.

Yeah, if you don't have to have a license or if you are ole enough not to have to take hunter's safety.
