Yes. But try get ball back, AWAY from Moses. In subsequent drive. But never recovered onside kick Atleast Moses did not gain many yards tonight

Most junior highs won't kick deep. Nephew can routinely kick it to 10-15, but he kicks it out of bounds most of the time. Don't want to risk a TD. Force them to go 65 yards.

Anybody who was there knows a few things:

1) Moses is a STUD. They scored 16 points, one was a run where he went through 4 kids and the other was on a punt return where he sealed the corner. Talked to the coach-- they don't practice punting, but you've gotta when you're at your 4. He also hurdled a center and stripped the ball. Was never brought down by less than 3 kids. Took a pitch left, reversed up the sideline and almost scored on the right. Kid can play.

2) Parkviews defense was amazing. They swarmed to the ball all night. Like I said they never tackled him with less than 3 yet tackled him all night. If you say it ain't true you weren't there.

3) PBS has some real talent. Both running backs looked amazing at times-- not near Moses good, but damn good. I've coached at that level and that's as good of a team as I've seen.

4) Moses didn't look like he was in midsession form. Freak athlete but he's been playing all year based purely off of athleticism. He also hasn't played much because he scores every time he has touched the ball. It was just a matter of time til he wore down and PBS knew it.

Although question for those who were there: it looked like the lab school had bigger and more athletic squads but got badly out coached in both games-- everything from special teams to formations to play calling. Agree or disagree?

Full disclosure: PBS homer.

PBS 7th/8th grade NEVER onside kicks until tonight. The reason it was done tonight was because the coaches aren't idiots. They kicked deep (I use that term loosely) when Moses wasn't in there. The go ahead TD for PBS was scored when Moses was in the game. He pulled the "I got a cramp" card when he was getting rocked because he wasn't used to it and they were losing. He's still 14 mentally. On UHS last drive, Moses was in the game but UHS coaches out thought themselves and hardly let him carry the ball. He was actually being used as a blocking back. Great game but a confusing finish. The UHS coaches failed in the end.

Moses didn't have anything to do with the punt return for TD. That was all #30 Lewis.

Also, safety #34 solo tackled Moses 3 times. One saved a TD (although there was a penalty on the play).

He got tackled several times by 1 player.....wasn't easy but it happened.

The other were never far behind though.

12 did twice and he's a 7th grader.....

And Nostradamus you must not watch all the kickoffs

I've been to every game because I have one on the team. They've onside kicked one time that I remember which was last week against episcopal and wasn't supposed to happen (from what I was told).

Eta: you're right. I take back "never"

Or hell, was it false river academy that we "accidentally" kicked onside?

I also take back him "never" being solo tackled. Wasnt trying to be literal. But it felt like he had 11 guys on him every time he touched the ball. The solo tackles were few and far between. And yes, they kick deep almost every time-- mostly because this is the first and only game which won't be a blowout.

Also, I'm not saying he single handedly made the punt return happen. But where was he when the ball went into the endzone? Ahead of the play blocking even though he started off behind it. From my angle it looked like they could have made a play if he wasn't blocking, but I didn't have the best angle.

I don't get it was Dylan supposed to run the ball without getting tackled? Was he playing PBS by himself? Was he supposed to be invincible!

Dylan was in front of the punt return blocking! We watched the video moron!

and to answer the question...

U high had a pretty solid supporting cast.. very good overall team and well coached.

A couple of times they got out schemed. It looked like on offense they kept waiting for big plays that PBS's Defense was schemed to limit.

Was 2 the best athlete on the field - no doubt. Doesn't make him the best football player though - and that is by no means a knock on the kid -

it is knock on the hype on a 14 year old kid - which I think is incredibly unfair. Especially when people that have never seen him play are hyping him.

I coached against two 8th graders years ago that both played in the NFL and both completely dominated every aspect of the games they played in - in other words it didn't matter who we sent after them to block or tackle - we couldn't. Both were the only games we lost.

the two players were Vance Joseph and Dre' Bly. IMO Vance is the best that every played at his HS.

personally I would have used 2 a little differently - on offense and defense.

cubs defensive scheme opened itself up to a lot of what PBS offense did.

it's very hard to throw vertical in the 8th grade - against quality opponents.

both teams have plenty players that will be very very solid players in HS.

I am sorry I been around this game an awful lot for many years - but to say an 8th grader will be a stud at the d1 level is just plain crazy. In all the years I have been around football I have seen but a handful that I would say that about.

and yes I saw 5 from St. aug play in the 8th grade and.... well... he was ridiculous.

I also saw several players that later became LA prep players of the year - and a couple of them barely stood out as 8th graders... and one didn't even start and his 8th grade team was not that good...

sad thing is there were plenty parents from other schools interested in that game wanting to see either PBS or Uhigh fail.... that's pretty sad.

I ain't referring to my kid.... not by a long shot...

so if a kid tackles another kid by dragging him down by the face mask - that's just a kid having fun...

if it's a penalty - it should have been called. at least that's what the referee next sitting next to me said. and the two HS coaches.
