IGN

Trying to find another link (that one is just a video), but they say it will take effect when the dashboard updates later this month.

ETA: Still looking for an official link. A lot that I'm finding is still calling this a "rumor". Crossing fingers.

Good news. I'm sick of being stuck with 200 or so points all the time.

They just need a way to charge your card like every other service on earth.

Still wary of this considering what happened to me, but I will give it to MS: they dealt with it quickly. At least for me.

Another article.

quote:

Microsoft has started to remove its Points payments system as the default way to pay for music downloads and movie rentals or purchases in Windows 8. The recent change affects the way Windows 8 users will pay for digital content in the operating system. Previously, in Windows 8 betas, Microsoft used its Points system for all Video purchases and rentals.

The controversial currency for Xbox Live and the Zune Marketplace has been widely used across the Xbox 360 to purchase Xbox Live Arcade games, gamertag pictures, and other downloadable content. The system means users have to purchase bundles of points that equate to 80 Microsoft Points for every $1. In our own testing in the final copy of Windows 8, we are now able to pay for music or purchase and rent movies in the Xbox Video store by using a credit card. You're still able to use Microsoft Points, but the store defaults to credit card transactions. A welcome change from the confusion of having to convert Microsoft Points to currency in order to assess the true cost of a rental or purchase.

We have reached out to Microsoft for comment on the change and we'll update you accordingly. Xbox 360 consoles appear to still be using the Microsoft Points system for now, but the change on the Windows 8 side will likely make its way to the Xbox with a dashboard update due later this month.

I mean that is going to happen whether they direct charge you the price of what you buy or make you buy MS points.

I can't remember what your exact incident was tho.

Account got logged into, and since I could never remove my card from it, they purchased $75 worth of MS points. The charge got sent back right away and the account was locked for a few days. But I vowed to never keep my card on my account again and just buy the points from Gamestop or whoever.

how do they purchase MS points and use them on their account? Couldn't they just spend them on your account?

Not sure. I have a few games that still say they are assigned to another console. I guess if they were to maintain control of the account, they could continue playing them. Or they know a way to transfer it to their main one. No clue.

Can you transfer points? Not sure if you ever played a COD game, but I would constantly get messages about boost lobbies or quick-scoping tutorials that required like 800 MSP. Always wondered how they got those points.

Good point. I would guess that means you can somehow transfer them.

I would assume you would go buy a card then message them the code on the card

Possibly. Not something you could really do on the fly, which is what most of those lobbies seem to be.

I'd bet that when all that started those kids may have gone and bought them knowing they would find a match like that eventually. I have never seen a way to transfer points...at least in the regular menus. Either way, I'll still use the MP points because I will not be putting a card back on my account either.
