I have a truly visceral hate of Kings of Leon. I was actually listening to one of their early albums in the car and Mrs. Baloo asked who it was and I told her "King of Leon." She didn't believe me. That's how different they sound.

And I think the sound of their last two albums is the sound of beige on white bread. If it was any blander, it wouldn't exist.

I'd like to throw Tame Impala into the mix. Nothing wrong with a little psychedelic rock.

Don't get me wrong, KOL early stuff was fantastic. And I agree that the last two albums have a more "commercial, appeal to the masses" sound, but to me it wasn't a negative thing. My mom even likes them! And she hates everyone after 1975, lol. I don't seek out the new underground bands, but lucky I'm friends with lots of music snobs so they get dropped in my lap. Love The Black Keys and The Avett Bros. I've seen several people post about The Silversun Pickups, don't get me wrong, I like them, but if you want to talk about every song sounding the same......sheesh!

I worked in a family owned music store and the owner was an old radio guy. He would get 10-15 promo CD's everyday. One day ~2002, he got Kings of Leon and we put it on. I loved it. It was 70's retro, with a new twist on it. I got excited thinking this great new band came out (finally) - that wasn't marketed strictly to the 13 year old girl. I wore that album out.

Boy was I ever wrong. You nailed it about them. The sound that got them famous is the one they took a steaming dump on, probably because a music producer told them to. I doubt very seriously they were in full agreement, but chasing the dollar will do that. Just ask RHCP about that.

KoL's first album was enjoyable, but they changed their sound for the worse and lost the plot...

Matter of fact, I never really have the desire to pull out Y&YM either... it was fun while it lasted...

I would like to second whoever said Queens of the Stone Age, btw. In the 90's, they would have been middle of the pack. But they're pretty much the only band I get excited to hear about coming with a new record. Another one which happens to involve Josh Homme is Them Crooked Vultures. They're coming out with a new one too!

Middle of the pack? I don't know. IMO All of their albums are really solid and I think hold up, regardless of the era.

Anyway, yes good rock music is harder to find these days. The good stuff is not force fed to us like it used to be (how fortunate we were in the 90s!). However, frequenting messageboards, using Pandora, and going to SXSW has led me to discover countless great rock bands.

It sounds like the OP is looking for "hard" rock bands. Bands like Modest Mouse and Built to Spill, although great bands, don't really fit here.

My short list?

Queens of the Stone Age
Titus Andronicus
The Mars Volta (2001-2008)
Dinosaur Jr

At the risk of sounding like a giddy fanboy, what have you listened to of Muse?

I think Muse sounds like a pale imitation of Queen. And I'm about the only person alive who doesn't really like Queen.

Not a fan of Muse, but I'm not their audience.

Black Keys is a really really good rock band. They are a little overexposed right now, but don't let their pop culture popularity confuse you; these cats can rock.

I saw them on ther most recent tour and the best part of the show was when it was just the two of them on stage. They somehow played harder and louder when it was only two of them.

Oh Jesus Christ, here we go. The only questionable album RHCP made was maybe One Hot Minute (I blame Navarro). Otherwise they are superb. I think some of you may need to tone down the elitest attitude, just saying.....

Man, not to be a dick or anything but what is your deal with Japandroids? I really enjoyed Celebration Rock, but the best current rock band?? Damn.

To KOL debate with everyone else:

Maybe we have different definitions of "selling out" but by my definition, that's exactly what KOL did. Baloo said it right. Their threw away their true self after their first 2-3 albums. If you really listen to each one, you can hear the progression. Easily. They slowly transition to a more mainstream sound. I've never blamed bands who sell out....it makes them more money. Who can blame them? But I do have a lot more respect for groups who stick to who they are. Obviously KOL grew older and matured in their lives, but I was not a fan of the direction their sound went.

/end Rant. They used to be my favorite band, which is why I seem so up in arms about this

At least there is one reasonable minded person here. I understand where people are coming from on the commercialized sound, but to say they went to total shite is a bit far fetched.

Not elitest, but I've been listening to RHCP since the Freaky Styley days, up until One Hot Minute - and then they lost me at that point.
