LETTER TO MILES
Coach,
Thank you for the great regular season winning streak! That doesn’t just happen!
One thing I noticed this weekend in the SEC. South Carolina threw less than 15 times, and Florida threw less than 15 times, yet they were successful.
Your offensive line determines your offense, not necessarily your QB. I believe in the right system, right receiving corps, and right protection, Zach Mettenberger would be highly successful.
I have one general idea, drop the passing. Drop trying to show everyone LSU has an explosive offense, drop trying to impress the top receiver prospect in the nation (maybe only sell him that he could be Mettenbergers answer next year), drop the promises to Russell Shepard.
Be creative in your run calls, don’t run to set up the pass, run to gash the defense. Your offensive line is geared for the power run. Your fullback is there to widen an open hole.
Don’t be afraid to run, run, run, run. Instead of being balanced in your offense, be multiple in your run plays. You have the team to be successful, and your o-line is built to pound. So pound, and stick with it. And only pass deep when the run is well-established. Not established, well established. I then would imagine your passing game would open up in the later parts in the game where you can have a defense gasping and wondering.
Apparently, USC found a run focus in the second half against Kentucky, and it carried through inot the UGA game.
Florida out played LSU at its on game of run-defense-field position. Out-play South Carolina at its own game, run- and be precise on your decision to pass. Set focus on attacking the opposing player that has shown to be over aggressive, take advantage of each individual piece and expose it. So this requires some good in game review of the defensive players, but do it ‘dagg’um.’
I believe that you should run the offense strictly with hindsight to the abilities of your lineman. Despite your likely great efforts in pass protection, your team has just shown that it is not capable (against both weak and strong opponents). It won’t get easier with the schedule due, so just take your losses and go full-blow to what your boys can exceed at.
I can’t say I think it is a good idea, but I wonder if Terrance Magee is someone that can bring a X-factor from the QB position. Abandoning a balanced attack as I propose would rely then on innovation and the brass to set aside some of your talent (#8). I wonder if Magee could bring a zest to your oline, as he could be a difference maker to yout offense from the QB position. You of course are much better to evaluate that, but I am wondering if it is not worth considering. My ability in regards to that determination is lacking, but be that as it may, I sort of feel he could, Something just says it to me. Your staff trusted him to run a crucial 3rd down play in Gainesville, your staff has often openly praised his talents, so I feel he must have something. I can not help just think that he could be a newer version of Herb Tyler with his #14. LSU was very effective on offense with Herb Tyler and Alan Faneca. L’el Collins I read is valued by the staff as a pulling guard. BRING IT! Maybe all this could be something to ignite your offense and your team.
Sometimes it just takes someone to care enough to DARE enough, and success does reward the daring, does it not?
The run to the SEC is through the run. USC, FLA, and BAMA all display that (as do we, but I think we should even more! Thanks to our O-line)
