Shoulder sprain/strain anyone??? Recovery time?

Anyone ever have this and how long did it take for you to be normal???

I fell a month ago today while running (don't ask please). 2 days later had an xray (negative for anything) but had severe pain. Was given pain meds and told to see an ortho.

Hate deciding on who to see and seeing doctors in general but was already seeing chiropractor (please don't start) for something else (which is now fixed). He's been doing ART and I have good range BUT have pain on certain activities and CANNOT lay on the affected shoulder without terrible pain/burning.

Started Buchberger 12 exercises and can do them but some cause pain ... my plan is to give it more time to heal and the exercises to strengthen the area ... an MRI was discussed BUT as I am not close to my dedutible which is horribly high I would rather wait for this until January as we'll meet it then as husband is having surgery.

Anyone dealt with the before???

Dooshay no ... certified chiropractor of sports medicine

oOo .. thanks ... heard torn ACL ... not sure if surgery is required or not and not sure about the season. The district seems weak this year but into the playoffs it would really hurt I would think.

I had rotator cuff surgery in early September. They told me to expect to be out 6-8weeks, light PT. I couldn't help my OT self, I was in the gym in 3 days benching 475-525, I was a little sore.

OT Answer: About 20 minutes

Real answer: It depends on what the actual injury is. If you have a rotator cuff injury, expect a good amount of recovery time.

But they tell me this is a strain ... and it burns like shit,On the top of my shoulder. Based on strength tests that they've done they tell me there is no tear anywhere but I'm assuming that MRI is the positive way to know if something is torn or not.

That said, do all tears require surgery???

And as an OT you should have known better!!!

I did the same thing in college (drunk) and my shoulder still pops when I move certain ways.

It hurt for a good 2 months...

Torn rotator cuff in 2002, skipped out on surgery, kept playing baseball. Dr. told me at some point I will have to have it, but if I can deal with it then wait. I sat out a week, stayed sore for probably 2. FWIW, I still have trouble with it now, if I reach overhead and back at all, it will pop out. Dr. showed me some exercises to do, I still do them on shoulder day in the gym.

Sounds like you are still doing too much at this stage. Sometimes less is more. Shoulders are easy to reaggravate.

What happens when you do less of the arm exercises? Does the pain decrease?

Well, the 12 exercises (1 set of 6 on one day and the next set on the next day, rotating days) are meant to be done with weights but was told (and I am obeying) to not use weights; just do the motions.

BURNING is the primary complaint ... and think of a wife/mother who is pissy because she either doesn't sleep enough or well enough because laying on the affected side BURNS like shite.

Advil PM at night is the only way I get any sleep ... and I sleep well that I don't notice HOW I'm sleeping and I wake up on the affected side with more damn burning.

Was this running to get in share worth it?? Down about 10 lbs and a pants size yes but pain wise hell no.

Ice ice, baby.

A home TENS unit could offer pain relief. Have you tried electrical stimulation in the clinic?

Your condition is more pain-dominant, rather than stiffness-dominant. Gotta calm the pain down.

I know you are looking for more, sorry.

oh they've done estim and ultrasound ... I guess I just thought I wouldn't have to still be icing a month after the injury.

Back to icing I guess (which feels really really wonderful in all seriousness)

There's your answer.

Ice X 15 minutes several times per day, as inconvenient as it is, and do that for as many days or weeks until you don't need it anymore.

Report back in your next injury thread.

I had a stinger (strained Brachial Plexus nerve) last summer. It took three months to resolve but I am old. Lots of wierd stretching. Don't rush it.
