Second years are currently required to join rounds in the hospital.

As a student in the most recent 2nd-year medical school class (last year's) at LSUHSC-Shreveport, I can tell you that you're wrong.

ETA: At least, what you said isn't true for this medical school.

He's probably talking about LSU-NO.

During 2nd year, the students go 2-3 times to the hospitals to practice H&Ps and present them to attendings at a later date.

The second years in groups of 5-6 are also going 2 times a year to "round" with an attending. Its not part of any official rounds, it's just rounding on a list of pts that have interesting findings and letting the students auscultate, palpate, etc. and then talk some about them.

Both of these are very interesting and a cool break from the all of the studying in 2nd year, but aren't really necessary nor would it appreciably affect medical education if it were to go away.

so med students from LSU will be less competitive when applying for residency?

residency programs will look unfavorably upon the students coming from lsu because they know they have less experience?

Eh. I know this has been responded to a couple times, but I'm just going to give a different view point.

I dont' think it will necessarily make the students less competitive for the most part anyway. Many other factors will still trump including board scores, research, clinical grades, etc.

However, many students do away rotations/auditions, where essentially they do what's called an Acting Intership (where they take on a role like a 1st year resident would do). These AIs can help you impress or get your foot in the door of a competitive program or any program you are thinking about becoming a resident at. At the same time, if you perform poorly, it can essentially shut the doors to the programs. Obviously, the more clinical practice you have during 3rd year, the more likely you are to impress during AIs. And that is generally what LSU-NO's students have been known for when they do aways.

And trust me, I've seen students from other schools come here and not know wtf they are doing and have poor clinical skills.

Again, it won't make or break any application, but its certainly helpful to have medical students with a lot of clinical training, so that they don't look like dolts during intern year.

------
Really, I'm not upset about these changes, but they should have been phased out better than what they have been. It would have been helpful for the LSU/VA hospital to be in place before all of this happened.

Overall, these changes will affect GME more than any medical student training. Sure medical students will get to do less things as a medical student, but we will still get to learn the basics and be able to do the scut work, learn how to write orders, tie a few knots, etc. It would be awesome to do more, of course.

It's gonna hurt GME though, imo. They'll still be competent physicians and pass the boards, but I don't think they will be trained as well.

The long term effect will be positive and Health and Human Services has been Jindal 's area of expertise for 20 years.

The truth hurts doesn't it? The best part is greedy little pigs like you are always the ones crying the loudest when you get smacked with some real adversity.

Ignorance is bliss, but oh baby when you finally get smacked by adversity you'll be howling for help.

I'd like to know how much I pay a year in taxes if you include income(business & personal), sales, property(business & personal), permits/licenses, etc.
