I'm thinking .243 but open to other caliber options

Any good youth models you guys recommend?

7mm-08 model 700 with a youth stock /thread

Leagues better than the .243 in every single possible way. Don't get a .243

very good info and the 700 is a great platform but don't count out the Savage or Tikka, or any other bolt action with a youth stock, the vast majority of rifles shoot better than the hunters that use them

I have an H&R 7mm-08 for kids to use. Ported barrel and kicks like a Benjamin Pellet rifle. Loudest gun I own, so kids have to have ear protection. When a kid is shooting I'd much rather him be shooting a 140 grain 7mm-08 bullet than a 90 grain .243. There really is no comparison between those two.

7mm-08 may be good also. Another route may be to get a .270/.30-06, .308 and shoot the remington managed recoil ammo. It is also available in the 7mm-08 that way when your kid gets older you just switch to a hotter round and keep the same rifle forever.

A buddy of mine bought a 7mm-08 for his boy at 7 or 8. Seemed to work well.

Tikka's are great rifles. I had one in .25-06 that was a pleasure to shoot. I'm just not sure about youth stock avalibility for them.

Most people don't give their kids enough credit. Plenty kids out there can handle full house .308 IF AND ONLY IF the gun fits them well. That is by far the biggest factor in percieved recoil. A good fitting .30-06 will be easier on the shoulder than a shitty fitting .30-30

As others have said, 7mm-08.

Or a 308 using managed recoil loads

AR-10 with collapsing stock and bull barrel. Relatively no recoil...can literally grow with the kid...accuracy at distance will far and away exceed the child's current abilities.

DPMS makes some good, entry-level AR-10s as described above.
Nikon makes relatively cheap AR designed scopes as well that are high quality relative to price.

My 8 year old neice killed a doe at 110 yards last year with this exact set-up.

I killed quite a few does and spikes with my remington youth model .243

Got it when i was 11. Killed my first deer at 9 with a .410 slug.

I am not sating that the 7mm-08 700 is not better but I bought a Remington .243 youth model with a scope for a about 350. It has been a very nice rifle and has since been passed down to my daughter. Very little recoil and will drop them in their tracks.

Didn't even think of that but that would be a great setup. If finding ammo wasn't a problem 6.8 spc may work too. But .308 is so much more plentiful.
