I will be receiving a Mini Thirty as a gift in near future. Planning on using it for hogs and maybe deer. Any recommendations on ammo? I will only be hunting with it infrequently and I don't shoot just to shoot (although there's certainly nothing wrong with that) so I won't need to buy in bulk. Just looking for an effective round that won't give me problems.

On a side note, I saw a coral snake in my yard a few days ago. First time I have seen a live one not behind glass. Has anyone seen these in the wild?

Then there's no reason to go with cheap russian surplus crap.

Get a good bonded soft point bullet made by any major manufacturer and you'll be set.

ETA: 7.62x39 is one of those rare calibers where it's actually easier to find cheap junk ammo than quality hunting ammo, so you may have to look around a little bit to get what you want.

Older Mini Thirties had the conventional .308 bore. Somewhere along the line they went to .311, which is the bore size of the AK47.

If you're plinking, hopefully it's .311. That way you can buy cheap import steel-cased stuff. If it's .308, ammo is going to be more expensive. The upshot is bullet selection will be way better.

ETA:

Further research indicates the 0.003" difference doesn't matter with the exception of a small impact on accuracy. You should probably consult with Ruger though, just to make sure.

You can buy some Hornady Match Steel ammo. That's probably the best you're gonna find.

This is true.

Hornady loads regular soft point ammo in 7.62x39, as well as all of the european manufacturers. I bet midway has some good stuff

Thanks. Am going to hit some of the local sporting goods stores at lunch and see what they got.

I recently bought a Ruger M77 in 7.62 x 39 and tried a bunch of different ammo in it, including Hornady, S&B, Tula, Silver Bear and Golden Bear. The best grouping ammo was Russian Golden Bear 125 gr SP. It grouped consistently 3 shots into 1" group. Paid about $6.50/box (20 rds). I went ahead and bought 10 boxes as a result. I cannot vouch for its terminal performance, but at the modest velocities of around 2400 fps, I bet the SP bullets will mushroom and hold together.I plan to shoot a couple deer with it this season and see how it does.

Don't waste your money on expensive ammo. If you're just looking to shoot some pigs I'd run Tula/Brown Bear all day. Shooting pigs is about throwing copper down range. The small difference in accuracy/expansion you get spending $0.50/round matters little when you have 29 shots backing up the first one.

Also, save your lunch break. Best prices on x39 are always going to be online.

Sage advice read too late. Nothing to be had except big "cans" of Tula ammo.

I'm about to search but would welcome any recommendations for online sellers.
